I've been away for some time since selling my 93 J30 several years ago. Family got too big for it.

Locally I ran across a very low mile 02 Q45 for $6,000. Seems like a really good deal but I really don't know much about them since I've been away fron NICO Forums.

From reading on NICO it looks like they can be problem prone. My J30 was bullet proof and easy to work on.

What should I look for on this one and is it really as good of a deal as I think?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

I just bought an 05. similar to the 02s. tons of electronic controls. parts are high, though there are some after market and used parts out here now.
bottom line to me is GREAT car.. but should not be considered a daily driver or one and only transportation. my two cents

Thanks for the heads up! Ran across it looking for something else but it seemed like such a great deal that it would make a nice 2nd car when the wife doesn't need the minivan.

But is it really a good deal?

Thanks!

Can you tell more details about the car?? What packages does it have? There were several packages available that year that could change the value. The issues people had with this car was oil consumption, if I were you I would get the VIN and run it at a local Infiniti dealer to see what was done to the car under warranty or since. Since it is a 10 year old plus car I would want to see at least 1 or 2 transmission fluid flushes and also know that the car didn't have oil issues early on which many had. From there you can of course run Kelly Blue Book and that will give you ballpark of the value.

The other thing you mentioned is that your J was easy to work on. That was a far more simple car, really an engine and transmission design from the early 1990's. This was pretty new and ground breaking at the time and way more complex to work on

The '02 also had a transmission control unit and ECU update available that helped with some throttle lag issues. I think some had an updated gas pedal design update available to help with that issue too. If those services were done, that would be a major plus.

Kelly Blue Book shows the base version at $9600 to $11,200 for a private party sale depending on condition, so the price you're seeing is very good if the car is in reasonably good conditon. That price almost seems a bit too good to be true though... I would do a lot of investigating before buying it.

Not sure what you're talking about, man. I have an '05 and if this isn't a perfect daily driver, I don't know what out there that is. What in the world makes you say it shouldn't be drive daily or relied on as the only method of transportation?

I don't think there's any issues with the F50 that typically leave people stranded. Typically things that are major issues give you plenty of warning, and other issues don't incapacitate the car, so you can fix them when it's convenient for you...

My '02 has been absolutely bullet-proof for the past two years and 30,000 miles. Both a daily driver, and it's made multiple long-distance hauls:

MN to GA
GA to OK
OK to MN twice
MN to OK twice

Nothing done other than routine maintenance, and front tie-rod.

That price is considerably less than I paid for my '02 with 105,000 on it. Either you're getting a smoking deal, or there's something wrong...

Duh,of course a 2002 model is cheaper today than it was 2 years ago when you bought yours.....its called depreciation.

My two cents ... means my thoughts. anyone can disagree with that. i don't drive it every day partially because i have not found a quality mechanic that is not a dealer who will touch it. the car is very complex to work on. want to put a front turn signal bulb in an 05? pull the engine covers, the grill, and the front bumper cover ... to get to the bolts that hold the headlight in place so you can reach it. Have a error light on your dash? forget AutoZone reading it, OBDII isn't doing nothing. you're heading to a Infiniti dealer. and you're bringing a checkbook. I have yet to get out of there without spending $700 ... and my last bill was $1500. which i am fine with. i budgeted $2000 a year maintenance on this car. because it is a eight year old $60,000 car which is loaded with high tech gear that only infiniti services and sells. i do not count on that to be my main means of transportation.
