My 02 smokes every now and then when I park on an uphill and start it. It's not a little smoke, but quite a bit. I took it to the dealer who said because the last owner missed a few oil changes at the dealer, that the warrenty didn't cover the repair. But what can you do.

Also, when I drive it on a long trip, there is a slight white film on my rear bumper. It wipes off and it's not losing any coolant, but it does use about a quart of oil between oil changes (3-4K miles)

Anyone else having this issue, or maybe point me in the right direction?

Tom

It is illegal for the dealer to ignore the warranty simply because the oil was changed someplace else. If you have records which show that the oil was changed on schedule, you should mention this fact to the dealer. (Be sure to also use the word "lawyer" several times during your conversation!)

2002 Q's have a reputation for using oil. Some owners have convinced the dealer to replace the engine, by bitching long enough - and loud enough - about it.

The dealer can ignore anything he wants your warranty is with Nissan. The dealer is just a repair shop with a direct reimbursement contract with NIssan.

Never confuse these two very different companies.

Nothing in your warranty disallows you from getting your oil changed elsewhere. Try another dealer.

Just when I thought Infiniti NA was good about taking care of bad VKs. I forgot that Nissan is going through somewhat lean times.

Well, the problem (I suppose you could call it a problem) is that I bought the car used and I do not have the paperwork showing when the oil was changed. Bad on me...lesson learned.

The dealer offered to tear the engine down to determine if the problem was neglect, but if they determined it was, the cost was to be on me. I wasn't sure who or how "they" were going to make that determination, so I declined. He also came up with some story about oil escaping from the crankcase into the intake and it burning off when it starts.

I'm the most suprised that Nissan wouldn't want to fix a problem where their latest model flagship smoked when it started. That can't be good for the image to everyone who sees it.

Oh well. Overall the car is a great car, and I'm still fairly pleased with it.
