actually, if memory serves me right, the temp probe only has ONE wire. It had ONE green wire to the probe, and it ran to the harness. The harness had two more wires, one was ground and other was power.
I took a wire clothes hanger and with wrenches, pulled it apart to perfectly straightness. I measure distance from firewall to headlamps and and cut the wire to that length. I filed the end to a blunt point to that it would not tear/scratch anything.
The green wire had the probe terminal on one end and it ran into the mirror wiring harness on the other.I clipped the wire in the middle (really long), and then used electrical tape to tape the end of the wire (the side that belongs inside of the vehicle) to the wire hanger on the non-filed side.
I then followed the hood release cable to the firewall and then sprayed the heck out of the hole with silicone lubricant.
I then pushed the blunt end of the wire hanger through carefully until I saw it in the inside of the fender.
I pulled the hanger out, with the wire, and then spliced the cuts. I clipped the probe to the lower air grill (in the bumper), and then plugged the wire in.
Inside, I carefully pulled the A-piller trim off, and then ran the wire along the A-piller, and then under the roof lining.
I removed the overhead console, and was able to retrive the green wire from there, and once you remove the factory mirror, and replace the cover, it leaves a nice hole where you can run your wires to your gentex mirror.
As for the ground wire, I went to home depot, got myself a self tapping sheet metal screw (the screw tip has a molded drill-bit shape). I clipped the mirror grounding wire really short, and then crimped an O-terminal on the end, and then I just drove that whole thing onto the bare metal behind the now removed overhead console.
As for the 12V power, you can either run it up from the fusebox along the A-piller (with the temp probe wire), or you can look for one near the overhead console.
On second thought, I think on my '97, I ran it from the fusebox, because I could not find any power in the roof that turned on ONLY with ignition.
Easy enough, you can just buy some fusetaps from radioshack and then crimp a terminal on it and run it from the radio fuse or anything else that turns on with ignition.
The hardest part is installing the windshield mounting tab!I think gentex came with a silicone or urethane based glue, but I suggest you get the bluish super-glue based one that you can buy from your autostores (pepboys, autozone, etc...). it has a blue activator in a vial that you crack to mix, and then put on etc...
In both times that I installed this mirror (actually three times including my wife (then gf)'s '00 Jetta), third times was a charm. Just use more than the 'dot' that they tell you (they lie!).
I had so much fun with my '97/'01. I miss them.My '05 has full options, including the DVD and GPS, so I am kinda stuck on what I should do for project...
For now, integrate Backup camera into factory navigation screen,Backup/front sensor,Homemade A2DP bluetooth integration for the factory BOSESome sort of bi-xenon setup (this is something I was dreaming of since my '01)...
If anyone has ideas, let me know...
Good luck on your project...
