Hello All,

I'm new to this forum. However I've kinda been lurking here for a few months. You guys definetely know your stuff.

I bought a 2002 Maxima in late september. It only came with one key. I went to the local hardware store to make a new. Obviously it doesn't work. Do I need to get one from Nissan directly or is there a cheaper option. I'd also like to get a second remote. What is the best way to do this and what should I expect to pay.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah, the dealership is the only place to get a replacement/spare key. Each key has a microchip in it (w/o it the car wont start). The key you got cut will only open the doors. the key is going to run u about $90 and to program it $110 ......so you're looking at 2 bills out da door.

I seem to remember being told the key cost $180 including the programming.

Your best bet for the remote is going to be eBay. Make sure it's a reputable member. I've seen them for around $30-$50. You can program the remote yourself.

Look for an 05 + Xterra Key They have the chip in them and only cost 15 dollars OEM. As for programming hopefully your dealer will not take you to the cleaners to get programmed. SHOuld be 0.5 hour labor

Why would the Xterra key be cheaper than the Maxima key?

There is no way to program the key yourself. The dealer uses CONSULT to program the correct NATS codes and such into the chip contained within the key.

You won't have that problem with an s13. The s13 doesn't have NATS so no worries.

Don't get shxtty with me. All I did was go off the info that is underneath your username. I didn't check the link. If you had said, "Hey. My cousin is having some trouble with his keys. Is this why?" I would have given you the correct information. So don't get short with me becuase I went with the information in front of me at the time.

You screwed up, don't blame him. Which forum are you in?...Yeah, that's right, the MAXIMA/I30 Forum. So he would be referring to a Maxima or I30.

To the OP. I would suggest just going to the dealer and getting it done. I know it's expensive, but so it not being able to use you car because you were cheap and didn't have a spare.

So how did I screw up? You don't go to other parts of NICO and talk about other things? He's not allowed to browse other sections and post in a thread he thinks may pertain to him? How was I supposed to know the original reasoning behind his post. Did you see anywhere that he was talking about an I30? I sure as hell didn't. I went off of the info on the left side of the screen just like anyone else would have.

So, until you can be the guy who never gives anyone the wrong info, I suggest you be quiet.

Wouldn't be the first time someone accidentally posted in the wrong forum or something.

Geez. Kenny tries to lend a hand and gets a bunch of guff for it. Not cool.
