02 Infiniti QX4 Shift Lock Problem

Hello, this is my first post on this forum, so I apologize if I didn't put this in the right spot.
My 02 QX4 all of a sudden has a Shift Lock problem. It has gotten worse daily, and now, I have to use the Shift lock release with my key.
I start the car, press the brake, and hear a very light click every time, but only get the louder click that allows the shift button to move in, and allow me to get out of park. I took it to the dealer, and they charged me $65 to check it, and said I need to replace the whole shifter assembly for $650.0!! I still hear a click every time I step on the break, but it is a much softer click than when it actually releases the shift lock. I don't know if it's the solenoid, or relay based on what I've read in here. My fuses are all good, and my brake lights work perfectly. What confuses me is that everyone with this issue either has no click at all, or has the normal click, but can't get it out of park. My intermittent loud click, and constant "soft click" seems to be unique to my car.
I've searched extensively in this website and I've seen the issues on mostly Pathfinders, but I can't find a post that answers my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This forum is awesome, and everything I read on here has great responses!
