02 I35 autotrans gear shift knob removal

how in the world does the gearshift knob inside the car on my auto trans come off the stick that it's attatched to? i want to put the new knob i bought on but cannot get old knob off. i own dealer repair manual but cannot find any info on wood knob removal. please help.

i don't know if it's the same on an 02 but heres what i had to do for my 96 I30. 1. take off the screw's on the back of the shift knob. 2. remove the trim surrouning the shift knob by carefully using a flat head screw driver and pry up on the corners. 3. i took off the center console for more working room, just unscrew it in the places it's screwed in (sorry it's not to specific i did it about 2 weeks ago). 4. cut the overdrive wires but make sure you leave enough wire to splice the new overdrive wires on. 5. take the old shift knob off. then you can install the new shift knob and put it all back together. hope that helps

The shift knob just screws onto the shifter itself. I.e. Twist the shift knob as though you're unscrewing it from the shaft. It's on there tight, so you'll have to use some muscle.
