'02 would have been a I35 w/255hp. '00-01 would have been the same body style but with 227hp (and the VQ30DE).

The '04 Maxima is 200lbs heavier than the '02 I35 and only has 10 additional hp. If the car was an I30 then you are still 200lbs heavier but have a 38hp advantage, somewhat negated by his mods. End result should be you losing.

Perform some mods and give him another run.

Aftermarket exhaust can be made quiet via resonators. Unfortunately I'm not up on my 6th-gen performance upgrade numbers to know if the stock mufflers are restrictive or not. For the most part, the best NA performance upgrade on the maxima would be headers. You could always try a shot of NO2

Sorry, missed your location. That would indeed be the VQ30 I30.

Nothing wrong with a 50-75 shot for some quick power if you are only needing it every once in a while. From a price point is should cost less than the 3" exhaust you are considering, which is probably good for about 5hp max. For a quick adder you can't beat it.

I don't see a reason to use a AFC on a factory setup. If you had I/H/E it would be a different story.

hhmmmm

I dont know what to do . I dont want to add mods on my 04 SE while I am woking on my 1999 project . it is fun to race with 04 but hard to work on 2 cars at the same time . you know here in Saudi Arabia we have a very powerfull cars like holden mounaro and toyota aorion . some of there owners sayed when they sow my 04 : look it is the new maxima . it most be powerfull . but they disapointed .

any way . what about technosquier ECU ? does it worth ? and how much does it cost ?

The Technosquare will adjust some parameters but I would not simply upgrade the ECU without some intake and exhaust mods. Usually it is used near the end of modifying the car so it can be tuned to the parts you are using.

Maybe look into Bullydog? The Altima guys seem to like it.
