1 mile from work at lunch running on the highway it hesitated at 60mph, like it wouldn't change gears. No problems the last 5 miles home, it sat for 30minutes at lunch. Started right up and went 30 yards before the service engine light came on and it stubbled to run. Turned it around and it would go over 10mph. Give it gas and it choked up. Tried to run it around the block but it stalled once. Started right up but wouldn't get out of 1st. Left it and went back to work. Came home it started right up, ran 3/4 of mile fine, then started stumbling again.Took off the catalytic and it would start up but then stalled after 3 seconds.Any clues? o2 sensors?

Best get the stored code checked out first.

Buy a code reader or tow it to a shop?

Buy a code reader, best investment you could ever make. Mine has paid itself off 1000 times over now. Just a small handheld from someplace like Harbor Freight will do wonders.

Soo, what ever fixed your problem? new MAF? Bad ground?

I'm interested because I have a 1998 frontier thats throwing P0100's (AFM/MAF code). So far i've encountered intermittent issues with the MAF, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (works more often before engine is warm). of the times that it works, it seems to fail after the engine is warm and does the annoying 2400+ rpm fuel cut-off.

When I test it, there's issues with the signal voltages, but I'm not ready to give 200-500 bucks for a new MAF yet. I've been trying to locate a schematic that shows the wiring from to the MAF to wherever they go. The closest thing i've found so far is a SR20DET ECCS schematic. I believe it's pretty close to mine (in regards to the AFM/MAF), but I don't know that the pins are the same on the ECU.

I've read alot of other posts that have similarities to my issue, but haven't yet found an identical fix.

Next on my list is to go add a ground or two, and (ohms check) find the wire that connects the ECU to the MAF (mine is 3 wires). On the SR20DET its pins 16,17 within the braided ground, and the third going to a number of places (ECCS Main control relay pin 5, CAS pin 3, coils relay, ECU pins 38 & 47)

Some other stuff i noticed, speedometer twitches when MAF acts up (ground issue?), and when the MAF is working it will try to die if i tap it (i know, says bad MAF to me too). I have cleaned it, and all the intake components, (yes with MAF cleaner). Have re-set the ECU, ran good for 5 mins.

So, what would help me - An engine wiring schematic for '98 frontier (there seems only to be dead links from previous posts on the forum for my vehicle, unless I missed one).Another idea to try (ECU temp sensor?)...

thx, Karl

Cool, I kinda figured so.

I actually managed to fix mine today too. I installed a ground to chassis, engine, and body. A friend gave me another 3 pin maf with intake body off a 240sx ka24de maf (factory installed alot further from the intake manifold). He has a lot of crap lying around, which I am very thankful for.

So I cut up my stock intake plastic and relocated the different MAF further away, and wired it in. It's not going to be permanent, but it will work for now. Codes cleared and 2400+rpm fuel cut-off gone, the DTC hasn't returned yet.

I'll look into a cold air intake that I can adapt to my current intake. At the moment the poor truck is having to deal with the stock air filter as well as another cone filter in front of the relocated 240sx MAF.
