Just replaced the stock air filter w/ K&N... fits directly in the box assembly!... Question is : How much if any HP might I gain? .. granted it is just a simple air filter.. 2HP sounds about right?.. not nearly enough to even think of feeling a difference.. Other question is: Someone once said you could use a coat-hanger and open up the flange inside the exhaust.. is this true.. for added power?>. Is it worth going w/ a Cat-back system.. and if so.. any recomendations.. I dont want a buzzy sound..looking for a "mature" deep throaty sound..Thanks again!Haggis!

Bad choice as the last thing the MAF sensor needs to see is more oil vapor. So for your questionable 2 HP you might well be replacing your MAF sooner and probably suffering HP loss as the oil film accumulates.

All this discussed in the previous posts. Ignore them at your car's and your pocketbook's peril!

when you say "wired", what exactly do you mean?... I thought it was just a flange that you push all the way open?..Or do you just mean you used a wire to open the flange? Thanks and how far back is it from the tailpipe? Can I perhaps see it using a flashlight?.Haggis

There is more low rumble on idle and sounds a little bit like a g35 when accelerating, but not as loud. The mpg really whet up at least 2-3mpg or more.

Get a coat hanger and a pair of pliers. The go to the passenger rear wheel by the bumper. Lay some carboard on the floor. You will see the valve by th e differential on the exhaust. Now it is your call where to connect the wire hanger from the valve to the body. Watch out you don't want this hanger falling apart and hit the axle and the solenoids and the wires.

Good luck, I will not be responsible for this suggestion. It is at the owners of their own vehicles responsibility for his/hers own action(s).

I was not into the HP side of this mod. Just wanted to free up the exhaust system like Mcrews did. I tried what he did and never looked back. More hummm on idle that is for sure.

albert, thanks for the plug!I had the rear mulffler removed and straight pipes with chrome tips. The valve that we speak of is designed to open on hard acceleration AND the muffler is disigned to accept the extra exhaust.with the muffler removed, the operation of the valve is accentuated.so by 'wiring' the valve open (since it is springloaded to stay closed) there seems to be better flow.I (and an 03 M45 owner on the M forum) feel like it has also improved mileage. let me state, i am on the road alot. I got 24.5 on a round trip to saltlake city last month. that included 4 days of driving to and from the hotel.

The exhaust note from mcrews F50 is really sweet rumble. I had my muffler removed from my G50 but not yet on my F50.The best mpg I could get from my F50 is 21.5 but then there's few times I'm going over 100mph+

Q45man,you made me smile..........over 100!!!!that's the problem!!!!

I have really become an 'old man' when im on the freeway.so I really try to max my mileage.

but it is sooooo nice to know that with a flick of the shifter ....I am ACCELERATTING past anybody!

After being on two q45 forums for almost 2 yrs, I can say that this engine is really at it's limit. (on the inexpensive addons)sure you can turbo or IMPUL the engine but you are gonna pay$$$$$.

most mods actually reduce hp on this car.they say that the 04-06 have a tighter rear end gear...which should make it a tad faster off the line....but wont help mpg.

You really don't feel 100mph on the car. I am the same with you on the mpg side. I try to max out the mpg. I also like it when people ask me what kind of car is that factor. Specially where I got the headlights (Are those stock?), ha ha ha.

first of all.. I asked a K&N rep.. (biased I know) about the filter.. 1.0 oz total of oil through the filter.. therefore not a concern...As far as the flange opening on the exhaust.. couple of questions... (I just did it and boy does that sucker have some spring when you twist it.. careful)....I am opening only one end of the exhaust .. does that not affect the compression/pressure, etc of those 4 cylinders vs the other side of the motor?... The rear muffler is just for sound?... perhaps an effort to quiet the might this engine makes?..Instead of just removing the rear muffler.. better to run cat-back dual exhaust to the rear?.. Obviously cost involved.. but we cant be talking much more than $300+- for cat-back?..That way all those opening of flanges and elimination of rear exhaust is irrelevant... Hate to say it but "wiring" the flange is a kinda "cheap-fix" for cheap people??.. then I am one amongst us! Hope I am wrong.. Sheez it is simple and free!Appologiez to anyone if this is found offensive! Haggis!

***i pulled mine after 3k miles, filters are cheap.....MAF are not.*****.As far as the flange opening on the exhaust.. couple of questions... (I just did it and boy does that sucker have some spring when you twist it.. careful)..

**********DID you read the exhaust file I sent from the FSM?It explains how and why on the exhuast.***********..I am opening only one end of the exhaust .. does that not affect the compression/pressure, etc of those 4 cylinders vs the other side of the motor?... The rear muffler is just for sound?... perhaps an effort to quiet the might this engine makes?..Instead of just removing the rear muffler.. better to run cat-back dual exhaust to the rear?.

********have you really looked under there?

*******actually, I wired the spring instead of cutting it uot like several others had done. That way I can easily go back to stock. And I wired it BECAUSE I took out the rear muffler that it worked with.If you dont remove the rear muffler........Heck, I dont know. But w/ the rear muffler gone...the valve "over reacted" when I goton it hard.Almost like a double downshift. so that's my storey....and Im sticking to it.

Hope I am wrong.. Sheez it is simple and free!Appologiez to anyone if this is found offensive! Haggis!
Also, why cut uot al that quality exhaustsystem....it is very good stuff...to bolt up something for 300 bucks that will rust uot?just my thoughts.

I try things one step at a time.

Who said I did it because it was free, I wanted to get more mpg like mcrews. Although the mod was free that was just icing on the cake. No offense to you buddy, I did not do it for the sound, but mpg.

LOL buddy No hard feelings here. Same team.

Catback, I don't know any who has it. Or you can just take the resonators out and run a different muffler.

2003-2006 have 3.13 final drive ratios. 2002 had 2.97. All from memory, so consult the FSM or OM to verify, the actual ratios.

There is some speculation that the exhaust valve increased back pressure at low rpm to increase torque, and not just for less noise. I would think twice, or at least document that forcing it open will increase standing start performance. Nothing is added to cars by engineers nor allowed by accountants that doesn't actually have some sort of benefit.

But if you thought two palying cards in the spokes made you bike faster when you were a kid, this modification is definitely for you!

Has a late model Camaro SS with super lumpy and loud exhaust next to me the other day. I am certain he couldn't hear much else, let alone myOEM exhaust. Jumped him at the light and he had no chance onto the entrance ramp. NICO ECU rules!

It's really not about how the engine sounds, but how it runs.

To each it's own. I like my mod, it has increased my mpg. If I thought it was bad I would have returned it to stock. I will recommend this to anyone who wants to do it, if he does not want to then don't or return to stock.

Are you ready to revv your engine 6700 rpm for 4 mins. I am ready to buy my plane ticket.

What, your car doesn't run anymore?

We'll have to limit it to second gear as I only have H rated tires for now. V soone to come, then we can go direct, 3 for me and 4 for you. Still have to find the road or track. About 15 miles of straightaway whould do it.

Anyone on the Exhaust Valve Coathanger deal have a pic??

Anything to gain MPG... works for me...

I actually noticed a big increase... by finding actual 100% gasoline versus the ethonal... Mine likes the 100% better.

Since Nissan pays a tax to Federal goverment for each vehicle that doesn't meet MPG Goals......................even 0.5 MPG is worth fighting for to lower selling price of vehicle by lowering tax..............why do you think you are smarter than engineers with your mods? I'm sure if you could prove a MPG improvement Nissan would buy your patent and make you rich.

Even the worst paper oem air filter doesn't drop HP by more than 1.0 so K&N drops are probably 1/2 that at best.

They just spend a lot on advertising and marketing bunk and pay sponsors fees to get decals on winning cars.

Then bring it down. If it runs perfect(sic) then I am sure it can take it.

Let's go, side by side. Are you in or out?

Like we say here, money talks, BS walks. Are you coming or walking?

Dennis, quit confusing these guys with the facts! They have their dream and want to live it.

I wonder if three cards in the spokes will make it faster?
