Really! thats good to know! how does it sound? Any different?xerexabante wrote:I have wired my exhaust open for a while now and much gain in accel and mp. A must to do.
Bad choice as the last thing the MAF sensor needs to see is more oil vapor. So for your questionable 2 HP you might well be replacing your MAF sooner and probably suffering HP loss as the oil film accumulates.haggisgood wrote:Just replaced the stock air filter w/ K&N... fits directly in the box assembly!... Question is : How much if any HP might I gain? .. granted it is just a simple air filter.. 2HP sounds about right?.. not nearly enough to even think of feeling a difference..
Get a coat hanger and a pair of pliers. The go to the passenger rear wheel by the bumper. Lay some carboard on the floor. You will see the valve by th e differential on the exhaust. Now it is your call where to connect the wire hanger from the valve to the body. Watch out you don't want this hanger falling apart and hit the axle and the solenoids and the wires.haggisgood wrote:when you say "wired", what exactly do you mean?... I thought it was just a flange that you push all the way open?..Or do you just mean you used a wire to open the flange? Thanks and how far back is it from the tailpipe? Can I perhaps see it using a flashlight?.Haggis
albert, thanks for the plug!I had the rear mulffler removed and straight pipes with chrome tips. The valve that we speak of is designed to open on hard acceleration AND the muffler is disigned to accept the extra exhaust.with the muffler removed, the operation of the valve is accentuated.so by 'wiring' the valve open (since it is springloaded to stay closed) there seems to be better flow.I (and an 03 M45 owner on the M forum) feel like it has also improved mileage. let me state, i am on the road alot. I got 24.5 on a round trip to saltlake city last month. that included 4 days of driving to and from the hotel.xerexabante wrote:I was not into the HP side of this mod. Just wanted to free up the exhaust system like Mcrews did. I tried what he did and never looked back. More hummm on idle that is for sure.
Q45man,you made me smile..........over 100!!!!that's the problem!!!!Q45man1 wrote:
The exhaust note from mcrews F50 is really sweet rumble. I had my muffler removed from my G50 but not yet on my F50.The best mpg I could get from my F50 is 21.5 but then there's few times I'm going over 100mph+
Also, why cut uot al that quality exhaustsystem....it is very good stuff...to bolt up something for 300 bucks that will rust uot?just my thoughts.haggisgood wrote:first of all.. I asked a K&N rep.. (biased I know) about the filter.. 1.0 oz total of oil through the filter.. therefore not a concern..
***i pulled mine after 3k miles, filters are cheap.....MAF are not.*****.As far as the flange opening on the exhaust.. couple of questions... (I just did it and boy does that sucker have some spring when you twist it.. careful)..
**********DID you read the exhaust file I sent from the FSM?It explains how and why on the exhuast.***********..I am opening only one end of the exhaust .. does that not affect the compression/pressure, etc of those 4 cylinders vs the other side of the motor?... The rear muffler is just for sound?... perhaps an effort to quiet the might this engine makes?..Instead of just removing the rear muffler.. better to run cat-back dual exhaust to the rear?.
********have you really looked under there?
. Obviously cost involved.. but we cant be talking much more than $300+- for cat-back?..That way all those opening of flanges and elimination of rear exhaust is irrelevant... Hate to say it but "wiring" the flange is a kinda "cheap-fix" for cheap people??.. then I am one amongst us!
*******actually, I wired the spring instead of cutting it uot like several others had done. That way I can easily go back to stock. And I wired it BECAUSE I took out the rear muffler that it worked with.If you dont remove the rear muffler........Heck, I dont know. But w/ the rear muffler gone...the valve "over reacted" when I goton it hard.Almost like a double downshift. so that's my storey....and Im sticking to it.
Hope I am wrong.. Sheez it is simple and free!Appologiez to anyone if this is found offensive! Haggis!
2003-2006 have 3.13 final drive ratios. 2002 had 2.97. All from memory, so consult the FSM or OM to verify, the actual ratios.mcrews wrote:they say that the 04-06 have a tighter rear end gear...which should make it a tad faster off the line....but wont help mpg.
What, your car doesn't run anymore?xerexabante wrote: I am ready to buy my plane ticket.
Then bring it down. If it runs perfect(sic) then I am sure it can take it.xerexabante wrote:My car runs and it is perfect.
