Quick question. I rarely ever use the lower gears on my car, but for whatever reason I was talking on my phone, not paying attention, and had it in 1. Accelerated from the stop light and redlined it before I even realized what I did. Upshifted back to D. I realized something was wrong when I got to a stop sign and the car didn't move as usual when I let off the brake after a stop, that movement it does just at idle with no brake. Still moved, but barely. Got to a gas station, put some gas in, and when I went to reverse off the pump... NO reverse :frown: it feels like it wants to move in reverse, but doesn't, not even an inch. Car accelerates pretty slow in D now too.

New transmission?

How long were you running at redline? Just a few seconds shouldn't cause that kind of severe damage. How is (or was) the fluid level?

As for how bad it is...really the only way to tell is to open it up. You can guess and theorize, but in the end you'll have to drop the trans and open it up to see if the theory is correct. You might get lucky and end up with just a bad torque converter.
When driving forward, does it successfully upshift? Or have you dared to drive it that fast since the incident?

The 2002 should go into limp home mode if you take the RPM's too high as a safety precaution to keep from having catastrophic failure. I've never heard of this keeping the car from going into reverse.

You can try resetting the ECU to see if that helps any. Is the SES light on?

Thanks for the replies. SES light has been on for quite a while now, maybe 5-6 months. But it's throwing 335 which is CKP, which has been replaced, along with the ECU, and still throwing that code. I wonder if the plate that the sensor reads is jacked. That never caused any noticeable performance issues though.

It was only at redline for a second, maybe. Soon as I hit the limiter and realized what was up and I let off the gas. I've taken it up to about 40 mph afterward. As far as up shifting, it feels like I'm in 2nd gear when I pull off from a stop. Just the sound of the motor and the feel of the car, that's what it feels like.

But yea... no reverse. The gears are working like this now. When I turn the car on, in park, the car kinda jerks slightly, very gentle but its there. In reverse, I give it gas and it doesn't move, car sounds and feels like I'm pressing the brakes down while I'm trying to move. In drive, it's like I described it above with the up shifting. 3 2 and 1 I haven't tried them.

Make sure the fluid level is correct and fluid does not smell burnt (new/good ATF color is pinkish red). Then check the shifter cable. If both are Ok, do a pan drop and check for debris on the pan and filter. Before dropping the pan, disconnect the battery to allow the controllers to reset (usually after 30 minutes).

If problem persisted or if there is so much debris, you need to consult a transmission specialist.

I haven't been able to do any good checks because of my long work days. However, something weird happened yesterday. I was driving to work, slow speed, slow acceleration. Was coming up to a yellow light so gave it a little more gas than I wanted to and felt a slight clunk. The car then felt "normal" again, acceleration and idle movement when I let off the brake, etc. So I pulled over and put it in reverse, and it worked just fine again. It's been fine since then, I did check the fluid and its level is correct and it's a really light red color, nothing noticeable about the smell either.

You got lucky this time. A pan drop will still be a good idea as well as an ATF replacement.
