hi folks .. i bought a 2001 xterra v6 from the dealer auction, so no prior maintenance records. the vehicle has approximately 205,000 miles on it. the rear main seal leaks pretty severely... my mechanic says he could change the rear main seal, but because of the wear on the crankshaft, it may leak again... would you go ahead with this repair? (i won't hold you to it) ...

i guess if the crankshaft is out of balance, it will damage the seal. the engine did vibrate, it was throwing a misfire code in cylinder #5 and a knock sensor code as well. i had my mechanic change the fuel injector.

thanks for your replies.. :)

I replaced a rear main seal on a '95 HB V6 that was leaking pretty badly, and the part of the crankshaft that mates against the seal was visibly scored. I thought it would just eat into a new seal and leak again, but I just cleaned it off really good, a little fine steel wool and polishing sand paper took most of it out. It wasn't completely smooth, but didn't leak again. That was almost a decade ago.

ircf, when your replaced your rear main, did you pull the engine or the trans?

I've got the same issue, and I'm leaning towards pulling the engine (I know, you have to lower the front diff), as I'll put on a timing belt at the same time, and since a belt's going on, thats halfway towards pulling the engine.

I pulled the transmission. I've done a lot of suspension and driveline work, so I was more comfortable on that end. Never pulled an engine before.

Ha, I'm the exact opposite -- I've pulled, rebuilt, turbo'd tons of engines, but I've never replaced a 4x4 trans before. The thing just looks huge. But I think I'll just bite the bullet and go the trans route.

Honestly, I don't think there's any reason to go out the bottom versus the top, especially if you're more familiar with that end and have other work to do there. The biggest pain are the bellhousing bolts, but those have to go either way.

The first time I pulled my transmission back in 2000 or so I was at college and had lots of help from people that knew way more than me (my experience at that point was basically brakes). I took it to a shop for a rebuild and they were confused about why I gave them the transfer case, too. They didn't need that for rebuilding and would just make their lives harder. I didn't know it wasn't all one piece, and all together it's damn heavy. Pretty sure the transfer case is heavier than the transmission.

I've had my transmission rebuilt twice, changed the clutch twice, and swapped tcase gears once. I'm not sure how many times I dropped the transmission for it, obviously at least twice, but I may have timed most of the rest of that to coincide. Did my brother's truck once, as mentioned earlier, for the rear main seal. That's when I learned that the VG30 flywheel bolts aren't torqued nearly as high as the KA24. Read the wrong spec in the manual and broke off one in the crankshaft. Amazingly, the broken stub was loose and came out like nothing was wrong.
