I have a whine in the engine compartment that increases in pitch with the rpms. Can't pin it down. Any ideas. It seems to have become louder over the past 1000 miles. Thanks!

i have the same whine too. when cold. I think it is either my alternator or somekind of pump.

Probably pulleys...mine whine sometimes when they're cold, or after I've hosed down the engine bay - Prestone Belt Dressing for the belts and WD40 on the backsides of all the pulleys...works every time. I do it about every 5-6k miles.

I wouldn't put WD40 on the pulleys. Seems like that would make it slip.

Have you checked the fan clutch? If it locks up, the fan spins full speed andwhines. If it is locked up, keep the rev down, you can throw a blade.

try process of elimination, remove one belt at a time & start the engine, could be alternator, idler pulleys, etc.

No I don't - and my 6 disc changer doesn't work. Would like to replace it.

No, I'm not saying put WD on the belts - behind the pulley on the bearing side of the shaft.

WD-40 is not a lubricant. If you think you gotta lube there, I'd use a light oillike 3-in-one.

Google around, there are folks who fix them. The usual failure point is a littlebit of white plastic. Or get an MP3 player and rip your CDs to MP3. I have aVR-3 VRFM8BLN which is a nice idea (it's a cigarette lighter plug that takesa USB memory stick with your tunes, and puts them on FM). But it has a numberof annoying attributes. This is probably a subject for another thread.
