The 97-01 were probably one of the most reliable Q's in the generation. About the only major issue they have is the coil packs. Obviously you have knock sensors like any other nissan in that era, but overall they're nice cars. They're a lot more plush and softer ride than the first gen, but they're still nice.
If you're looking at modifying, a boosted 1st gen is probably gonna be easier (although not like either is easy).. 1st gen doesn't have OBDII so MT swap is pretty easy, and you can easily re-flash the ECU for boost (which I can provide). You'd be on your own on the 2nd gen. You also start with about 30 more HP on the 1st gen.
Now what would be REALLY cool is to swap a VH45 into a 2nd gen with a 5-speed.
