Hello everyone. Im not new to the Nico club already own a 09 Infiniti M45x. But im lookin to get another car maybe a Q45 and wanted to know anything i could about the car. What issues are regular or known issues. Im thinking of getting a 01 Q45. Want to do a boosted big body car. Maybe even do a 5 or 6 speed conversion. If anyone could give me any info or lead me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

The 97-01 were probably one of the most reliable Q's in the generation. About the only major issue they have is the coil packs. Obviously you have knock sensors like any other nissan in that era, but overall they're nice cars. They're a lot more plush and softer ride than the first gen, but they're still nice.

If you're looking at modifying, a boosted 1st gen is probably gonna be easier (although not like either is easy).. 1st gen doesn't have OBDII so MT swap is pretty easy, and you can easily re-flash the ECU for boost (which I can provide). You'd be on your own on the 2nd gen. You also start with about 30 more HP on the 1st gen.

Now what would be REALLY cool is to swap a VH45 into a 2nd gen with a 5-speed.

You can easily stiffen up a second Gen, but 01's often have the electronic shocks and there are few aftermarket options available. But for a performance tune-up the 01' is a tough one. While the engine is very nice it rev wonderful there are nearly no performance mods available for it off the shelf or even with Japanese inport. You can find a cat back exhaust but doing a boost or turbo, you're 100% on your own.
