with the engine running, i hear a noise as if the timing chain is loose or just that the chain is running over the tensioner. with really cold weather, the noise goes away, and when the engine is really warm, the noise dissapears. i have no idea what could be the problem and how to fix it. i took it to the nissan dealer but they said it is normal. i dont think so. i am a John Deere mechanic so i know a little about engines. Any help or info related would be hugely appreciated. Thanks much

welcome to NICO!

The timing chains dont usually cause problem, what weight oil are you running... Using a different oil could do the trick.... I recently switched from 10w30 to 5w30 and i noticed a little bit of lifter tick upon startup..

it sounds nothing like a tick at all, it is a constant sound that sounds like metal running along more metal. just put 5w30 last week but no difference. i am really thinking something with the chain but i could be wrong. is there anything else that comes to you which could make a noise?

Ive just never heard of anyone having problems with the 3.5s timing chains.. I suppose its possible the chain tensioners arent working right anymore....? Normally the nissan timing chain setups are very maintenance free for the life of the motor.

how hard is it to get to the tensioner? what will all have to be removed to get at it?

Looks like you have to take the front cover off in order to get the tensioners.... A bit of work indeed.
