Bought an 01 pathfinder about a month ago. 137217 on it when I got it for a sweet deal. Its an LE if that has anything to do with electronics.

So, the other night it just shut off going down the road. Figured it was just a small hiccup simce it started right up. Few days later it wouldn't start. Now, I believe the two problems arent directly related. When it doesn't start, the security light stays lit. I can lock it and unlock it with the key and after a few times of going that it'll start and everything is normal.

However, going down the road, regardless of speed, gear or rpms, it'll stumble amd throw a fit for about 10-20 seconds and itts fine the rest of the day.

When I get time next week I'm going to start with the fuel filter since its cheap and easy(ish) to replace and probably needs done anyways. I don't think this will help me though since when its running it'll cruise 90mph down the road with no issues.

I'm thinking maybe the fuel pump relay, or fuel pressure regulator are having fits. But I also wonder about the chip key being bad or starting to go bad. The key isn't in good shape as it is, you can see the blue casing of the chip on one side.

If this was your issue, what would you start with? I know better then to throw parts at it and hope for the best. But I also don't want to pay anyone to diagnose it if I can help it. I know I can get blank keys on fleabay and habe it programmed afterwards. Which I really need to do anyways since I only have one key as it is.

Thanks for any instite and direction. And for anyone interested, install haven't got my remote start working. Have a lot going in right now and weather has been cold snaps lately.

Thanks again.

Forgot to add, when it doesn't start, it cranks fine. And no codes related to starting or other sensors. Only code is for a purge valve or something like that that was there when I first got it. Drive it 1000 miles with 0 issues until now. Always use the same station when filling, and always use the same pump since I work at the station I get fuel at, and have always used premium fuel in it. Doesnt get abused and very rarely do I throttle it passed normal sensible operation.

I think you are right on the money. A new key is the easiest / cheapest thing to try first for the security light problem. If that does not work, the receiver in the steering column would be the next suspect.

Fuel filter is a good place to start for the hesitation. More info on the stumble might help - is the engine warmed up or not, does it have to do with throttle position - i.e. - acceleration - or steady throttle?, etc.

Give the maf a good cleaning and see if that changes anything.

I assume your check engine light works and you have no codes at this point?

No codes that relate to anything important. Hesitation happens at full random. Cold, fully warmed up, driving through town, or cruise set at 70. Although, hasn't done the hesitation in a few days.

Would a solus pro or something like that be able to pull NATS codes? Or is that a deal specific scan tool?

The codes you are looking for are powertrain codes, so a regular code reader sees them. P1610 to p1615 or so. Here is a link to p1610, which sets after 5 failed attempts to start with a faulty key: https://www.engine-codes.com/p1610_nissan.html

It includes a procedure to use to get out of a lockout situation. May be helpful if your problem gets worse.

As to shutting off while going down the road, was it just the engine that shut down, or did everything shut off? If it was just the engine - there are two crankshaft sensors on the truck - the second is tucked up under the front pulley.
The camshaft position sensor or the second crank sensor could be failing and not setting a code. Crank sensors are the more common cause of a shutdown with no codes, but a camshaft sensor may do it as well. Crank sensor kills ignition, camshaft sensor kills fuel.

I think the security light issue is first on the list. Maybe carry a code reader with you in case you need to read codes.

The p1610 only sets after five failed attempts in a row. So maybe thats why?
