Did your mechanic replace them with oem coilpacks? My car refused to Accept anything aftermarket.

I'm just throwing this out there, but maybe it could be a timing belt issue? since changing the sparks didn't fix it.

Its a 3.5 so it has coil packs and the 3.5 has a timing chain

I've seen a few posts talking about P1320's and misfires but I thought I would try to see if we can get it narrowed down.

Every once in a while (every 60 days or so) I would start my 01 pathfinder and it would shake and shimy. Clearly misfiring. Driving it would causing the flashing SES light but as the car warms up (about 15 minutes of driving) things would clear up. Getting P1320 and P0300 random misfire from the CarChip. This is getting worse as time is going on. Starting to happen every 10 starts or so. It still goes away when the car warms up, though. Same codes.

I did get a P1145 code a few months ago and replaced the sensor. It went away. Also had the Left CAT code, took the car to Nissan and they reprogrammed and it went away and hasn't returned.

Most of the posts point to the ignition coils but my concern is that this is intermittant. I would think that a coil(s) would just go bad and not be better after warm up.

Any suggestions to nail this down would be appreciated. Could it be another sensor?

ThanksJay

I want to contribute a bit on how to resolve the infamous P1320 random miss fire issue that is plaguing 2001 pathy. I know it might be a little too late as most of owners probably have a round of coil change to a later version that gets the problem fixed. But the approach summerized here is generic and also useful diagnosing problems in other area.

If you run P1320 along (without any P030X code) , the conventional wisdom seems say that there is no way to determine which coil cause the problem and you have to replacess all 6 coils. which is quick costly (and time cosuming to replacing) This turned out to be not true after I find this post and try it out myself:

Now you might think the tools required(namely labscope) to diagonise this is out of reach to normal people, this is not true either. Most of you should have a laptop PC laying around you can buy a cheap chinese USB Oscilloscope. I used one similar as this for $60 and it has more than enough bandwidth for car electrics and it has been working great for me so far :

You will need a low amp probe which is not too expensive. I bought a used one for $50 and also this wire loop to easy the task:

I was able to tell immediately from the waveform that #1 and #6 are different from rest of them, so I replaced those (be sure to use the OEM or Hitachi one, and also later version with black DOT on it). and misfire never come back again.

Also the $100+ equipment investment turned out to be the best money I spent. It basically open the door for me to use waveform to diagnose car problem and I used it to troubleshoot/assess the condiction of fuel pump, fuel injector and oxygen sensor etc...

Hate to bump an old thread....but I Just replaced all my coils and proper NGK spark plugs. Unfortunately I was stupid enough to use aftermarket coils and I still have the P1320 code and now a MAF p0100 code! So lesson to all: Don't use aftermarket coils as I'm betting that is what is still causing the p1320 issue.

Same as i replied on another post. Here's my experience n hope it might help someone in the future with this issue. Dont remember what code p1320 is but i also replaced my plugs with ngk platinums and new coil boots about 1yr ago and would randomly still get an ocassional misfire from 1 cylinder. Long story short, my oem coils were still good and i just wrapped the coil boots(plastic part) with electrical tape and to this day i havent had any more spark misfire issues. The spark seemed to be arcing thru the plastic boots before and once i wrapped them in electrical tape everything was good. It was a cheap fix so give it a try. Good luck. just my .02
