Post

I have a '01 maxima 20th anniversary edition with 100,000 km (62,000 miles).

A few things I'm concerned about -

1. When it's cold out (I live in BC) the car will stutter along for a few minutes before it gets going. After that it's ok.

2. When I stomp on it the car will accelerate quite nicely up to 4500 RPM. At that point it feels like the power to the wheels stops being transmitted. When I back off the throttle the power reengages and the car carries on. So far I have not got it passed 4500 RPM as I am a bit leary of what may happen. WTF???

3. Oh yeah - the service engine light is on........

Mostly concerned about item 1 & 2. I assume item 3 is related to these problems.

Thanks

Welcome to NICO.

The logical step would be to have the codes read at your local Autozone or other parts store. Find out what the code is, and that could explain what is going on with your car.

Thanks Max,

I've called the local Napa store and the guy said that he could sell me a OBD2 scanner for $290. Not into that.I'm going to call a couple of the local shops to have this done for what I hope to be a fraction of the price. Will update post as I get more info.

Cheers,

VB

Autozone/Checker/Advance and the like should read your codes for free. No need to pay anyone.

Get that code checked for free at Autozone

In America, that light might cause you not to pass inspection

Still snowed in?

You should convert it to a snowmobile

Going in on Monday! We shall see.

Here in Canada we have decriminalized marijuana, gay marriages, bacon and hockey - but do you think I could find somewhere to get this code read for free? NO. It's gonna cost me over $100.

I will post results once I get them.

Cheers,

Be sure the device you buy reads codes AND allows you to erasethem

I like mine from Actron

I found mine on line $20 cheaper than Auto Zone

OK - the code came back as 00171 - bank 2 lean. So pretty much my mechanic is going to replace the faulty O2 sensors at a cost of $850 CAD. Not totally sure if this is causing the car to stutter when cold (this hasn't happened in awhile mind you), or to stop revving past 4500 RPM.He did mention that went onto a forum on iATN and received a few replies to consider changing the MAF sensor. Any thoughts on this? I understand what the O2 sensor is doing but what exactly does the MAF sensor do?

Cheers,

Oh yeah - the MAF sensor is coming in at $660 CAD. Does anyone have any experience with buying this stuff at some online wholesale distributer?
