For the last couple of weeks our maxima has started having problems shifting to first after sitting idle for a while. Usually after shifting from reverse to first the car lurches and acts as though it will die at any second only then to come to life. It has 149k miles on it and has had every scheduled service as it came. Any ideas?

How is your trans fluid level? When was the last service on the transmission?

A tune up was done last Aug and the car has been at the dealership for other issues since then. The 28 point inspection that some oil change places do as well have come back all good.

I'm not trying to be an a**, but you need to go check it for yourself. Proper directions can be found on page MA-21. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/i30/2001/ma.pdf

When the fluid is new it should be a clear, bright, red color. The fluid should be changed every 30k miles. And with the mileage you've got, I would probably go ahead and drop the trans pan and replace the filter as well (especially if you don't know when it was done last).
