My son has an 01 Maxima, and it was running just fine, until he took his summer tires and rims off, and put on winter tires mounted on steel rims. Now he has all the ABS system lights lit up on the dash.ABS, traction control and whatever else is tied in to the system.I don't understand, so I'm wondering if changing out to steel rims can trigger or disable the ABS system? Any enlightenment would be grateful. It still runs fine, by the way.Thanks.

The wheels themselves shouldn't cause that.

Are the tire sizes staggered significantly?

He didn't break the wire going to the ABS sensor did he?

If you put on wheels/tires that are vastly different than the OEM, than you will get errors from the systems, as they are based off wheelspin and rotation.

As long as all 4 tires are the same rolling diameter, it doesn't matter what size they are, OEM or otherwise. The system looks for differences in rotation, but doesn't compare them against any OEM basis.

One thing that comes to mind after reading the responses is that he didn't check the tire pressures before mounting them. One tire was quite low, so he drove it that way to a gas station a few kms away, and then filled up all his tires to the same pressure. Maybe the uneven tire pressure triggered the fault. How long would it take to reset, or does he have to do it manually? The tires are all the same size by the way, very close to OEM size. Thanks again for your responses.
