hi,

I have recently bought a '01 QX4 with 13K miles and in showroom condition, it drives great and feels great!

I am bit confused about the AWD system in my vehicle ie. when I switch to AUTO mode all 4 green wheels light up in instrument!! when i switch to 4H again all 4 green wheels light also!. I am confused because seems to be no difference between AUTO and 4H!!!!!! . I like to know if I have locking differentials in my QX4 and if yes which one: front, centre or rear??? thanks:confused:

in auto mode the computer controls the power going to the wheels as needed. i believe it drives the rear wheels, and transfers power to the front when there is wheelspin.

in 4hi, the power is directed to all four wheels no matter what.

If I remember right, when the switch is at 4H, not only 4 wheels are green, but the center square should be orange, indicating all 4 wheels are locked together and all gets power.

At AUTO, the center square light should be off. All these should be found in owner's manual and in the quick reference inserted in the pocket on drivers sun visor.

If you are on asphalt in 4 WD with the center light on all 4 wheels have the ability to turn, the front is not LSD so if either side can slip it will, but the rear will drive both back wheels to the point that the left or right will fight each other on a sharp turn. In 4 WD Hi or LO refrain from hard turns unless you have slippage via mud gravel, sand snow. Often when going from 4WD to 2WD the motor that disengages and engages the front needs time to do its job. So from 4 to 2 more so than from 2 to 4 you need to allow time or movement with wheels pointing straight and in 2WD slow motion back or forward will allow lockup and disengagement to flow more easily.
