Hi, my 2001 I30 with 149K mi on it suddenly gave me grief this AM when it first wouldn't start and then did but wouldn't idle and just died out. I had a local shop look it over and they stated it needs a throttle body and an intake boot (rubber) which is cracked at the edge of the hose clamp areas.
I did drive the car to the shop and it runs just fine once it is started, it just needs to have the RPM's kept up to prevent a stall to say about 12-1500 RPM. It runs fine on the highway and had been getting close to 24 MPG with no performance issues.
I was thinking that it may be the AICV rather than a throttle body as the $1,300 estimate is a shocker at this time of the year... I wouldn't think the engine would run so well if the throttle body was defective at all.
Anyone have an idea on this matter?
Thanks for your help.

Whereabouts are you located? Do you have any salvage yards near you? Do you hope to fix it yourself? Are you getting a CEL code?

I usually keep a spare IACV, throttle body, and Mass Air Flow (MAF) that I've pulled from a wrecked Maxima or I30 for occasions like this. It can sure keep you from incurring repair bill.

Living in St Augustine Florida, not near any salvage yards like we had back in NY.
I'd sure like to fix it myself. Been doing little repairs like front struts, alternator, starter and radiator in my garage, so I'd say I can handle R&R of a control valve if necessary. Only I don't have means of getting codes now, that's why I went to the local shop.
I still don't think it's a throttle body because of the way it runs & the MPG.
After reading about the IACV and leakage, I kinda want to change it just to prevent a ECM R&R.!!!
Thanks

I thought you might have been in Seaside Heights NJ

No kidding and unplugging the electric motor mounts will save your ECM also.

If you are getting a check engine light, you can take it to an Advance Auto or an Auto Zone (most parts stores) and get them to read the code for you. They do it for free to sell parts to DIYers.

If you need a new IACV, you can get one at Advance Auto online use the HUGE50 discount code for ($50 off) and specify "in store pickup". It will cost you roughly $159 and change.

I bought a little $49 code reader/reset device at Harbor Freight a few years ago. That thing has been worth its weight in gold. Friends and neighbors stop by and get me to reset their CEL codes.

This video is something to consider when replacing a 5th gen IACV.

OwnerCS - I appreciate your help with your links etc. I had purchased the owners CD some time ago and used it occasionally. As the car gets longer in the tooth I imagine I'll be needing it more often, with joining the forum, it's great to have it online and available on my laptop or iPad. That's a good thing as I don't always have the CD available.
Also, I checked out the Harbor Freight code reader and will make the 35+ mile trip to the 'local' store to pick one up. If nothing else, my kids will use it one their vehicles, they're always asking me for a little help or tools etc.
Next up is checking out Advance Auto for their deal on an AICV. Thanks so much for your time and help.
BTW, do you agree that my engine would be running poorly if the throttle body/chamber was screwing up?
Thanks Again

Usually a throttle body can be cleaned. I've always been able to clean mine.
