Squeeling the tires has nothing to do with shift "speed". The auto can't squeel it's tires because RPMs are lost as the gearbox shifts, more so than a standard tranny, but none the less the actual gear change occurs much faster in an auto. Even though RPMs are dropping the wheels receive a nearly constant push, so there is no sudden shot of power to them as the new gear engauges. It just can't "dump" the clutch like you can with a standard. Chirping the tires into second also doesn't equate to faster acceleration, you've just dumped more power than you needed to, to get it into gear.
For example, my friend has a 2001 Grand Prix V6 ram-Air auto. It has more power than my 240, it has a quicker 1/4 mile than mine, but he can't light up the tires AT ALL! I can get a full burn through first, and a decent squeel out of second. There are, however, a lot of auto trannies that will squeel tires because of better shift points, and lots of HP!
