You don't have to redline it just to move it, but the vtec kicks in @7000, run it up to 8,000(<--this is a very fast moment in time) and keep pushing until fuel cut... it's kinda fun.
With some 205/55-16 RA-1 competition tires on my '99 si(identical to '00) and suspension set up for road course, it was lots of fun to push the car and keep it in vtec range.. in between 7 -- 8k rpm.
Problem with drag racing is, even with a very skilled driver, the 1-2 shift will drop the engine below vtec engagement. All other up shifts at redline will keep the rpm within vtec. Hammer gear one up to just over 8k rpm, crisp shift, back on the gas in 2nd and engine pickup rpm will be just under vtec, robbing you of precious time until you re-enter the powerband. Throttle modulation will help maintain rpm, but at the cost of clutch slip at already high rpm.
You can only get so much wheel speed out of first, then hit gear 2 and engine rpm matches gearing, to bring the engine below vtec
easy to beat up on the '99-00 Si models.
