just got an email from stillen. having a sale on cold air intakes--regularly $177.45 now $129.00.

i'm not too familiar with intakes,,,is this a good price? a good unit???? is it worth any of the performance increases?????

i know some here have said any kind of intake is not worth it (i.e. dennis), but i do see some of our Q owners have intakes installed. what are your thoughts???

nah,,i think (like i said, no expert) it's just the bracket with the filter, probably right where the air box is now.

Seems to me all the aftermarket CAI's for Q's are missing one important part....the actual bulkhead that creates the cold air box. Has anyone done this (created a custom box) yet? Just slappin on a cone filter without the box isn't gonna do much.

That's what we need. We have a few people trying to come up with something.

Creation of the cold air box shouldn't be too hard....(1) Remove stock air box... (2) Make a template out of cardboard... (3) Make final box out of aluminum (3/32"). Make sure to fit a flexible rubber "gasket" on the top to seal to the bottom of the hood.

Viola! Done :rolleyes

I have a question about the cone air filter versus the box air filter. From what I have read...the cone filter takes in about twice as much air as the box filter. Now my question is...can a ramair type system be EASILY designed so that the volume of air entering the box filter exceeds the volume or air that the cone filter would take in.

Now I know that everyone has there thoughts on K&N....Cone vs Non-Cone....Ram Air vs. Cold Air about the drawbacks and postives and I don't want to ignite an old debate. I just want my question answered above....can a box filter be fed a ram air type system so that at 40 mph the air flow that is entering the throttle body is actually more than what the cone filter could pull in on its own....that is all I need to know and please hold your negative comments back about this type of idea...thanks for your understanding

My main interest in a ramair system is that my friend has a mustang with a very nice ramair system on it being fed right into the standard air box for which both he and I can feel a difference with and without the ram air at speeds in excess of 40mph and we really feel a difference at 80+mph.

Well we all have out cents to throw in so here's my 2 cents....

Well I dunno about you but I love speed and the sounds of a roaring motor... Well they say blah blah blah blah about degree of Air.. Wel we did a lil ghetto modification. we added a Dyer Auct tube from the bottom grill redirecting the Cold air outside to blow and hit the cone itself. I've never had problems going agianst other Q's. Sorry Man... The Silent motor isn't for me... That's when you keep your car a luxury car and no racing parts. LOL but that's juss me. :) BTW the Air duct thing is someone you might wanna get if you plan on getting the intake sys. by stillen. You can hear the air come out the sides of the hood when on the pedal. :)

I've seen a couple Q's with they're home made cold air box which traps off the engine heat to the Intake. I bealieve Joe who's is a member on here in Cali was the first person i've seen with it done. and a handful more with the custom CAI Box.

thanks for your response, but that does not answer my question....I want to know which type of filter gets more air to the engine at highway speeds of 40+...the cone with a cold air duct or the box with a sealed ram air type system. I know that someone will probably say it depends on the size of the air scoop, so please keep in mind that it would be a standard air scoop that you see on other aftermarket ram air type kits

Also, there's a REASON why I can still see the cross-hatching in my cylinder bores after 105K miles: It's called OEM Nissan Air Filters (every 10K miles religiously).

Get your 3 hp elsewhere - Swap out to all synthetic fluids or clean the plenum... :) [/quote]

The cross-hatching was still visible on the cylinder bores of my Eagle Talon at 122K miles (and about 100 autoxs and numerous track events) after using a K & N for 90K of those miles.

I would worry about the increase in intake air temps with the Stillen, I wouldn't worry about filtering efficiency (assuming it uses a K & N).

With an oiled filter, like the K&N, you need to worry about MAF contimaination. These things are fragile enough as it is.

That's a valid concern with a hotwire sensor (which the Q45 uses?) . My Talon had a Karmann vortex MAS, so it wasn't an issue.

You don't have to oil the filter.

Say huh? Are you telling me that the oil is optional?

I'll stick with my OEM filter. However, I like the idea of an intake pipe from a duct in the lower grille, up into the bottom of the airbox. Think I'll take a crack at it....

You can buy a WRX hood scoop off of eBay, and install in in the hood, right above the filter, then build a box, around the cone, to block off heat from the engine.

This would be truely cold air induction, and water, and everything else.

I have the K&N kit on my car, and I like the roar. I have 2 filters. I oil one, and let it sit for a month or so, then install it on the car. It still gunks up the MAF, and I have to clean it all the time.

I do not worry about trash, or dust particles, or getting anything in the motor, because the K&N filter does a great job of cleaning the air. It just has a lot more surface area, and can allow the motor to suck more air in.

The oil does "activate" the fibers, to get even more "stuff" out of the air.

My wife thinks the car is going to explode, if I ever get over 5500 RPM, from the scream from under the hood. The stock filter box really made the engine quiet.

Did you watch my AVI video? That's what ours sounds like.. but it's kinda weird the Webcam does picl up on the DEEP tone... i have another vid of me Revving and Geez you'll think it's something that pushes 600+ HP!! The Hood scoop in my oppion is juss silly...! People already make fun of the giant hood scoop on the WRX already... Juss run a air duct tube for the air blowing in directly to the motor. If you seriously have problems putting one in. I'll be more than happen to happy you. The end of the Air duct tube blows cold air right where the stock air duct should be. .. You ever wonder why those drag cars have a metal tube sticking out of the front of the car... it's to catch air and blow it right on in! :) Trust me... i got other peeps doing the same back in Cali with Different cars.
