hey. i am wondering if anyone has ever replaced their rear speakers with 6.5" subwoofers? is this possible? if it is, what would i need to do to make it work right and have good bass quality? I can get 2 6.5" subwoofers for $20. they are the subwoofers from this setup: http://www.laaudiofile.com/pm21.html

You are wanting to replace the factory 6.5" speakers with a home subwoofer setup? Aint gonna happen unless you build boxes for them. The only way to use 6.5" subs for a cars back deck, and not use a box, would be some 6.5" free-air subs which are usually not subs but mid-bass drivers.

ok. thats what i figured. the subwoofers are not in the original boxes. the guy built his own ported boxes. how hard would it be to turn the rear deck speaker area into a box for these subs? is there room under the plastic pieces to form a box?

I'm not familiar with the rear deck of a 240sx. Why not just build a real sub enclosure and use a real sub?

ive grown out of that phase. i dont like sub boxes sitting in the back. im more into the clean look now. i dont need my car to thump. i just figured 6.5" subs in the rear speaker locations would give me nice bass, not too much, and will still look stock and clean.

An 8" built into the corner of the trunk should do just fine while leaving plenty of space.

Idk. Ima try the 6.5" subs idea with built in boxes. I dont wanna have to use fiberglass to make a box fit cleanly for the 8" sub in the hatch.

Good luck on trying to build boxes for the back deck without using fiberglass. Post up when you are done.

guess i wont be getting these subs anymore. scratch that idea. lol. i still wanna figure out a way to get more bass without having to have an subwoofer mounted in the hatch. i like the clean look of having everything hidden and look clean. any ideas?

The main problem is that the trunk area isn't sealed from the passenger compartment. This is the biggest concern.

There are 6.5" "subs", they're not really subs, that would work in this application, but you'd need to seal everything.

Thats already a known fact. I would seal the area after removing all the interior pieces. The main question is how to wire the subs up without an amp and using the stock speakers wiring.

You could install a lowpass filter on the wires. That would eliminate high frequencies.

yeah i was thinking that too. im just not sure if its even worth all the trouble and whatnot. ima think about it.

anybody got any ideas on where to put a subwoofer that is out of the way and cannot be seen? i would go that route if i knew a place to put it thats not out in the open.

Do you have a coupe or a hatch back?

Damn... If it was a coupe you could just cut a hole in the deck and mount a box to the underside of it...

Not sure if you can do anything like that with the hatch back.

I am not familiar with the hatchback area.

If you don't mind can you take a couple of pictures. One from the back, left, right, and passenger compartment.

I'll be able to make better recommendations.

Yeah I can do that. What do you mean by passenger compartment? The main reason I cannot put a sub box in the rear and why I want a hidden setup is because I do food deliveries as a side job and need every inch of room in the back of my car.

Can't you access the "trunk" from inside the car? If you can I am talking about open that area and take a picture from inside the car of the trunk.

How many watts do the rear speakers receive from the factory radio? That will be a big issue when talking about power requirements needed to push any form of midbass or sub bass.

I am not sure how many watts the stock HU pumps out. I will eventually be getting a double din w/ navi headunit to aid in my deliveries as well.

It's probably less than 12w a channel.

Yep. You'll definitely need an amplifier. Amps are easy to hide though. I personally puit mine under my front seat.

I'd do a Completely fiberglass box in one of these spaces to maximize airspace while minimizing intrusion.

I think the corner by the tail light would be a perfect spot for maybe a 10" sub.

thats what i figured you were gonna say. i need every inch of room in my car for my deliveries, so this isnt possible for me. im guessing ill just have to go with some mid-bass speakers or something like that. thanks tho.
