I've reinstalled everything and looked all over the internet. No luck. I may have the problem solved now that I've had a few more cups of coffee and actually paid attention to what I have. The turntable has a signal gain dial tucked around the side that I had completely forgotten about. Works just like the volume control within the programs themselves.I'm using the Numark PT-01 portable USB turntable and love it. It's not the fanciest by far but incredibly easy to use. We're casual listeners so we're not looking for professional studio sound and this turntable is very good for the price. We paid $99 at Guitar Center.
It has an internal amp so you don't need any other equipment between the record player and the computer and it has an input plug so you can run your tape deck, microphone or anything else through the turntable and convert that stuff to digital, too. It comes with EZ Vinyl Converter, Audacity and ITunes software. It's great.
Don't forget something to clean the records before you put them on the turntable. I found the Stanton VC-1 liquid and brush at Sam Ash Music.
