  Q45 trouble

Hello first timer

I have a 1996 Q45 which has 2 codes
0325 knock sensor I was told this would not turn on check engine light
0335 crankshaft postion sensor I clear codes 0235 comes right back with check engine light also.Does anybody know where the crankshaft position sensor is located and how to remove and replace.by the way if I run the good gas 93 she runs perfect
I looked thru the site and could not find any information about crankshaft postion sensor
Thanks bdl

Welcome to NICO!

The "crankshaft position sensor" is typically abbreviated CAS (for crank angle sensor)

If you don't have a copy of the factory service manual, you can download one in our library here.

I believe you just unbolt the old one and insert the new one. Then you have to reset the base timing - which requires a timing light. Or you can very accurately measure the position of the old one and install the new one in exactly the same position and you'll probably be fine.

Good luck!

Heath

Thanks for your help
Do you have a link to infiniti parts catalog link?
when I try and find a crankshaft position sensor
all these part houses take me to a camshaft position sensor or crank angle sensor
which is not the right part.I called a Infiniti dealer he went to the shop repair manual and can see the part I need but has no part# listed for a 1996 in his computer. He is still looking into it for me.

Thanks bdl

Replace BOTH KS and harness.
CAS code is usually dirty corroded plug or socket unless you have over 250,000 miles then they wear out.

have 94 q45q: Had motor replaced. Was ruuning really good. Engine started bucking at 2000 rpms. Somedays will run perfect. Somedays will not start, engine light will be on. If you let car sit for 20 minutes or more will start. Never no when it will occur again. Engine has less than 40,000 miles on it. Very powerful motor.

Bucking is MAF connector, KS will cause all kinds of crazy codes. When my KS failed, it threw KS, O2 sensor and leaking injector codes on mine. Fixed KS and harness as per Q45 tech and it all went away and has not been back since....

Remember 1996 Q45 is very very very different [acting/coding]from 1995 or earlier. The OBDII ECU.............besides the milder cams and lack of VVT period.

You are right the local Infiniti dealer did not have a part # for the Crankshaft position sensor in his catalog but he was able to get the # from the manufacture

How long has that failure for a parts guy worked at the dealership?

There are three part numbers for the Distributor (As its called in Nissan FAST (Dealer parts lookup program))/Crankshaft Postion Sensor. But the one for your year Q45 is: 23731-67U01-

That seems tobe the problem everybody seems to think that the crankshaft postion sensor and the crank angle sensor are the same thing
but they are not on a 96 Q45.The crankshaft postion sensor on a 96 Q45 is located on the bell housing of the transmission part #237310J200

If you go to the service manual for a 1996 Q45
It shows the crankshaft postion sensor on the bell housing
of the transmission.1996 Q45 is different than all the other Q45
It took the dealer a couple of days to come up with part #
I have not installed the sensor yet but I can see it and the sensor is right ware it should be.My Q45 runs great but it has code

It looks like you've done your homework. What we're all used to referring to as the CAS is called the camshaft position sensor in the 96 FSM EC-9.

The Crankshaft Angle Sensor is indeed bell housing mounted and measures gaps in the flywheel teeth to sense engine speed. From the FSM EC-189 "The sensor is not directly used to control the engine system. It is used for the onboard diagnosis of misfire." Q45T*ch hinted that the codes may be related and that the knock sensor is causing both and should be replaced first.

You may find that the CAS code is related to the dead KS. The sensor looks easy to unplug and remove- one bolt. Ohm testing with a voltmeter and inspection of the part are simple (EC-192) and could save you the $100+ you've spent.

Thanks for your help Mike
I will still replace the crankshaft position sensor first because it looks
easy to replace.I was going to do it today but when my wife drove the Q45 home last night the brake lights would not shut off.I thought it would be the brake light switch.WRONG It turned out tobe a plastic bumper that the
switch rests on.So I had to manufacture a new piece out of plastic (dealers were closed)
works great alittle time consuming though
I have owned this Q45 for 4 years never had any problems until now by the way Genuine Infiniti parts had the CKPS for $43
for that price I will RR

Could you ohm test the old and new parts at the bench and post results for future reference? It's a quick test- one probe on each pin with voltmeter in ohm setting. Thanks.

I checked the resistance on the old CSPS it had a open no reading
should be 166-203 ohms.Looks like I may have got lucky
new CSPS is installed cleared codes have not come back yet
Q45 still runs great always did
