Very smart! I was initially going to suggest the Consumer Reports option but changed my mind . I suggested it once before (in one of my earlier replies in another thread)... and several members jumped in to report there were plenty of free services that were just as good. As a result I decided not to plug the CR service again.
Anyway, I used the CR BL service as well. I had no problem paying the fee. In fact... I signed up for the "unlimited" reports option (all the reports you can pull for 3 months" for $39. I pulled down the invoice numbers on the Rogue, Honda CRV, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4 and a dozen other cars when working all the dealerships. However, if a person (like you) has already made their mind up and knows what car they want then IMHO $14 to get the Consumers Price report can be the best money spent. I can 't figure out why people will part with $25,000 or more to purchase a car but not be willing to pay $14 to make sure they are getting the best deal possible. Anytime I can spend $14 to save Thousands should be a common sense move.
BTW: Your follow on post where you gave more details, (i.e. MSRP, Invoice, taxes, tile registration etc... this information helps make your deal look better that it did originally.

The only purpose of my original reply was to make sure you understood (or were at least aware) that you "were not" getting $4500 for your 1999 Infinity QX4.

CR recommends that you negotiate UP from the CR BL price instead of DOWN from MSRP - that's what I did. And I think I just crushed the hell out of the dealer. CR says that the dealer should get 1%to 5% ABOVE the CR BL price of $26,273 and that would be a GREAT BUY.
I can get mine for $500 BELOW the CR BL Price.
Not bad! As stated earlier I also used the CR BL information. With the CR data I was able to and negotiate a price on my Rogue of $600 over dealer invoice. My $600 over invoice was out the door "including" title and registration fees, tags, destination fees, highway fees, and ALL taxes. Period (Taxes in my state are 7.5%.
The ballpark dealer price you acquired via Consumer Reports ($26,273) is the price that you, me or anyone in the car buying market should be able to buy it for "Without a Trade In!"... Without Cash for Clunkers rebate". Are you really getting $4500 for your QX4? No. Based on your numbers it appears your are getting in the neighborhood of $3500. Not bad... but is your QX4 worth more than $3500? Is it worth more than $4500? Possibly. I checked Kellys Blue Book on a 1999 Infiniti QX4. (I had to guess at some stuff) I said your QX4 had all the standard options plus leather, that it had 150,000 miles on it ... but it was only in Good, not Excellent condition. Kellys says your car has a Private Party sale value of $4790.
Is it a pain to sell your own car? Yes it can be. Is it easier to trade it in? Sure. Are you okay with selling (trading) it for less than its reseller value? Only you can answer that.
For arguments sake.... lets say you decide "not" to trade in your QX4 but sell it to a private party or via Craigs list and apply the money at contract signing to buy down the principle amount when buying the Rogue. Using all the rough figures being thrown around you could probably save another $1000 to $1500.
NET: Would I personally hassle selling my own car to pick up another $1000? No! Why? Because anyone you sell it to could come back weeks later and hassle you if a problem pops up. Even more important... during the time it takes to sell your car... someone could end up buying the Rogue you have your eye on and you might not find another one with all the same options and color. (2010's hit the lot this month so the 2009's will start drying up.) Could you improve the deal you have? Probably... but not by very much. (unless you were willing to travel to a Nissan dealer out in the sticks)
If the Rogue you are lusting after really is "everything" you want (exact color and everything) then what I would do... is go back to the dealer (they already know you are serious) but make up a story. Give them the idea you are on the fence. For instance... tell them that now that the Cash For Clunkers program has been extended, you now have more time to consider if you have done enough research. Tell them when you were getting the CR BL report you noticed CR rated the Subaru Forester as their number one pick for small SUV's. When the dealership gets a paniced look in their eye because once again you are getting ready to leavie the dealership without signing a contract... wait for them to ask "What do we need to do to make the deal". Important... MAKE IT WORTH YOUR WHILE... DO NOT accept something lame like free oil changes or free detailing for a year. That costs them nothing.
Here's a good idea: They them if they swap out the Continental tires for Michelins... "and" throw in the spoiler they have a deal!
The aftermarket spoiler is about $280 (close to $500 installed) and getting a set of Michelins would be the icing on the cake. (Read this thread for some insight)
