wow great work on those taillights, thats truly unique...did you use tint or spray for that lower part?? Also, did you know you can have your fog lights come on seperately from your daytime running lights and your headlights? I dont have daytime running lights so I did the mod, now i can have my fogs on with no other lights on

id go HID too but I love my yellows and my headlights aftermarket HID's give me enough problems already (had to replace a ballast and a bulb in the last year)

Thank you, Qxxx4...I used VHT Nite shades for the taillights and I'm very happy with it. Also, I'm interested on the mod you talked about the fog...Please post the information how to do it. I believe I've seen it...But if you did the mod please post. Thanks

Thanks for your kind complement. I took out the fog lights housing and mounted it to the frame buy the radiator wall. Also I had to make a hole in the fog housing... I'll post step by step pictures soon. Sorry my iPhoto is not working for the moment.

longhornsqx4: No I have not done the independent switch for my fog yet. I think it's illegal in VA.

Here is the link to help with the mod you're looking for...

No I didnt mean to run them only, was just curious what powerred them. My factory wires dont work for some reason on one side, so I was hoping this kit was switch operated or something, does it just tie into the factory wiring?

Id like something that is stand alone kind of deal

What is the hole in the top of the fog light casing for? Is that necessary?

Thanks

Looks good and I see your not that far from me in Woodbridge. I'm up by Reston/Sterling area in Potomac Falls. I also have a 2001 QX4.

Questions:

1. I am not very familiar wfith the HID kits but I was curious how the wiring works, I couldn't understand it in the photos. Are you hooking into the factory harness to control the HIDs?

2. I thought I saw a post this week that had the place you got your HID's from. Where did end up getting your kit from? (love to do this in my QX4 and 64' Lincoln Continental)

will the turn signals still work if you disconnect the factory harness from the fog light assembly and connect the HID wiring to it?

Thank you!

yes, you do need the whole since thats where the wiring for the ballast comes out of.

Are you using a wiring harness?

It's possible that it's not getting enough juice to ignite the bulbs... if only one light comes on, try turning it on for a while, then quickly turn off and then back on to see if the other comes on. If that is the case... then you might need a wiring harness.

The reason is, that even though HID use less energy overall than Halogen, it needs a LOT more to ignite the bulb, it has to vaporize little bits of metal. Once the metals are vaporized, it doesn't need as much to keep them that way. Which is why I said to quickly turn off then on, so that ballast on the bulb that was on, switches more quickly from "ignite" to "normal" mode.

So, it's possible that the ballasts aren't getting enough juice to ignite both at the same time.

Another possibility is... they're just bad (bulbs and/or ballasts).

Out of three HID kits, I had one bulb die in the first kit, and was in the process of dying in the third kit. I switched it back to my second kit so I can avoid driving with only one headlight when the bulb dies. The second kit has a "beam pattern" problem, in that it throws enough light UP on low beam to piss off some drivers.

i'm using the original harness that came with the qx4 since i was just replacing the halogens with hids.

i have tried turning just one on and then turning off and then on again to see if the other would light up but that didnt work.

i unplugged one hid and the other came fine. did the reverse and other one was fine. took the whole bulb and housing and plugged them with different ballast and they worked fine but only one at a time.

i'm guessing i'm not getting enough juice since i only hear one ballast kicking in. how do i get juice to both at the same time? would changing the my fog fuse make any difference?

You're better off getting a wiring harness so it draws power directly from the battery and not from the factory wiring.

Changing the fuse only increase the risk of overloading the factory wiring.

is this the harness i'm needing?

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAP...AX:IT

if so, what is the blue/black wire connect to? is it supposed to connect to the on/off switch from the car? also, if this harness has the plug labled #1 & #2 into the ballast, what do i do with the plug that came with the hid? just tape them up?

thanks for the info

yea, that's pretty much it.

I hadn't realized how "complex" the Qx4's fog lamp was compared to the PF's... but after thinking about it... again, yeah, pretty much what you said.

you'll have to splice together the wire coming from the combo socket (original wires for the fog bulb) to the blue/black wires in the harness.

What I would so is,

On the fog lamp closest to the battery, cut the line coming from the combo socket that goes to the actual fog light... cut it close to the socket to give yourself some length to work with it. Splice those two wires to the blue/black wires from the HID wiring harness.

Alternative steps:

This will be useful if you think you'll switch them back to halogen bulbs. find/buy an H3 socket. Make sure it's the one that will plug INTO the HID wiring harness... I can't tell if it's a male or female... or how "complex" it is, since a google gave me one over-engineered plug. Buy either two paired double barrel connector or three paired single connector... round ( http://www.radioshack.com/prod...04095 ) or flat ( http://www.radioshack.com/prod...04017 ). or whatever you're more comfortable with. Those links were just examples, in fact they're not even for the same gauge wires... make sure you get the right ones... I think for 14 gauge wires (?).

Instead of cutting close to the socket, you'll want to cut far from either end... the point is to put the connectors in so that you can easily reconnect the wires. Then, on the newly acquired socket, you put the matching end so you can switch from halogen to hid wiring harness.

Kinda like the following for three paired single connectors... it's a really BAD drawing, but I hope it gets the point across...

edit: whoops, I forgot to draw the other wire for the turn signal... it doesn't matter anyway.

k sorry for reviving such a zombie thread but just got my hids........... first of all one of the bulbs are broken so that sucks a** and two i can't figure out how to wire the ballasts up.... i figure before i contact the company for another bulb i should see if the other one works as well as the ballasts... i see in the pics that the factory harness is stilled plugged into the factory position on the fog light because of the turn signal i think, but then what do i plug my ballasts into to power them up?

Did you have a problem with the h3 bulb fitting in the fog light housing? And my hid bulbs don't have the same pattern to fit where the factory bulbs went. As well as being too long to fit in my 02 qx4.
