well about 8 months ago i was having some fun when all of the sudden CRUNCH!!!, I shreaded third gear. Since then i have been trying to enjoy my car as best as I could with only the remaining four gears...WELL NOT ANYMORE!!!. I secured a replacement transmission from a 96 Z32 about 2 weeks ago so I finally had the chance to get started today. SO NOW ON WITH THE GOOD STUFF!!here is a few pictures of the transmission intenals that came out of my car...as you can see the damage is pretty severe..whats shocking is the fact that the majority of the damage was only on the third gear and counter gear for third gear and nowhere else...MOVING ON!!here is just a few pics of the inside of the bellhousing case where the gear exploded and made contact with the case.few pics of the replacement unitman its nice to see whole gears AGAIN!!!here are some shots of the hybrid Z32/RB25 NEO bellhousing setupyes I know its still a pull but you'll see why its still a pull in the upcoming pics.this is a Mckinney motorsports Z32 shifter hybrid setupthis is a very nice well built piece... and this is why i am STILL running a pull style clutch...NEED I SAY MORE???ok so now on with the install...it went pretty well with little issues..although the only issue i can see thus far is the shifter although is well designed doesnt fit very well..I am very confident that Mack at Mckinney motorsports will sort this out just as soon as I can talk with him. here are pics the the shifter placement issue...other than that small little hiccup with the shifter the swap went very easy..although i HIGHLY suggest if anyone plans on doing this that way i did without removing the engine you had BETTER have a lift and numerous pole jacks to support the weight. CAN"T WAIT TO FEEL ALL FIVE GEARS!!!...hehe its been far too long....

found a few more pics so i decided to throw them up on here as well...here you see a picture of the transmission crossmember. its the same one for the RB25 transmission and it seems to fit just fine..here is a shot of the driveshaft that was used with the RB transmission put in place to give you an idea as to the difference in length of the rear housings here is a picture of the shifter placement inside the car..as you can see its not in the center of the hole..Mack at Mckinney is working on this as we speak.

just got off the phone with Mack and it looks like I may have to open up the floor of my car somewhat to access the shifter plate properly in order to mount my shifter to it..Mack apologized for the mix up and is helping me out by making me a plate to cover up the hole properly as well as some sort of shifter boot to cover the hole up once the shifter is in place..

yeah I figured I would have to modify the transmission tunnel shifter whole any ways. Keep us posted.

this is actually a kit he designed for the 240Z when using a RB25 and a Z32 transmission setup like mine..he told he thought it should be the same cause he has sold a few others and nobody said anything to him about it not fitting...he couldnt apologize enough for the mix up and told me he would make it right...THANKS MACK FOR EVERYTHING!!...your one bad mofo..

Good work but after seeing where the shifter ends up I think I'd rather go for a z31 turbo or the pathfinder replacement.

Frankly, I think the complexity of the internals of a transmission freaks people out. I personally would be hesitant to pull it apart and start working on a custom setup since I've never had experience with transmissions before.

How is the transmission shifter bracket working for you? You ever get pictures of how much you ended up modifying the transmission tunnel whole? would be curious on the stance of the shifter.

You have a NEO rb25, so I assume that you had a RB25 5spd trans( since you put RB bell housing on z32 back half, so I assume it was from your trans that broke) . I though they were indestructible as many people claim them to be. How did you manage to do this ????????????

well they are pretty tough but i wouldnt say indestructable...that transmission has been seeing north of 500whp for a few years.. so it has been stressed pretty good for a little while.also if you hit a dip in the road like i did while power shifting into third and the shifter pulled out of that gear just a wee bit while you were engaging the clutch well yeah , you can prob see why she did what she did..hehe

As the pictures show the Z32 linkage is off set to the drivers side and to keep linkage working correctly there is NO way to move it to the center (OR a cheapway) This is as short as we can go with this set up and cost of building a new linkage/trans case would not be worth the cost.. The part that make the Z32 trans swap cost effective would be lost...

Mack did a great job on that setup. Great option for those looking for a USDM transmission swap over.
