Last night on the way back from Sacramento me and a friend raced an Altima 3.5 liter.

That thing is BALLS!

My friend was driving my car..... we both punched it... and we're pretty even in the 110-120 area.

I mean I was yelling at my friend not to lose at 120+ mph. Finally after 125-130 we just left him behind... missed our exit and ended up in Modesto in what seemed like 15 minutes.... but it was all worth the extra 1/4tank

The only reason the Q left him behind at 125-130Mph as you state is because the Altima has a 130mph speed limiter.

The new v6 altima,accord,camry,g35 all will kill any stock 90-96Q from 0-125mph---function of 300+/- horsepower v6 combined with 5 speed transmission gearing and lighter weight

Altima will run to 60mph about even with a Cedric/Gloria/M45. Quick FWD car. Its a trashbin inside, but good value for money.

The Altima interior may" look " refined, but one touch of the materials tells the truth....cost cutter cheap feeling. The G35 and maxima are not much better.Same with the old I30/35 none of them has the quality materials of a true lux, or even entry level luxury car.Volkswagen and audi set the bar in interior refinement and feel in the $20,000-35,000 price level

I can tell you Nissan/Infiniti made before 2000 uses much better material for interiors. My friend has a 2005 Maxima and he is pissed off that the interior of my 93 J30 has got better LUX feeling.

VW interiors are garbage. They may look and feel refined but they are crap. Go look at a VW after a couple of years worth of use and it will be falling apart broken plastic and paint (or whatever coating they use) peeling off of often used surfaces. It looks terrible. The only thing worse that I've seen is a cheap domestic made car like a Focus, Cavalier, etc.... Then there is the check engine light that never turns off, oil leaks, on and on and on.

VQ Altimas and Maximas are quick. They don't weigh very much at all, and make quite a bit of torque with a WIDE torqueband. The 5 speed autos help, too, keeping the cars in pants-slickening torque all the time.

I usually accelerate faster than people, so at red lights I pull into the lane next to someone if there's an open lane. I've had a couple of occasions where I've underestimated VQ Altimas and my casual-but-aggressive acceleration wasn't nearly enough to put me in front.

The new Altima is pretty respectable inside. Certainly no Infiniti and not quite up to Maxima specs, but it's not particularly cheap.

They also set the bar for having the least refined reliability by rating bottom 3 on consumer reports in 2003/4.

We never hit over 130... maybe 128-129 at tops. I surely pulled faster in the 123+ zone.

NightRiderQ45 - need not worry, there was no one around. Besides for all the lives I've saved (yes i'm a hero, 3 times), killing a few would put me in balance. I only do 120 in 25 zones anyway. No fun when its only adults watching.

I guess we all agree that VW are horrible! I've hit 120 before in my Q but I was so nervous I had to let up off the gas!

I'll jump on the VW-hate bandwagon! Overpriced and underbuilt in addition to being some of the ugliest cars on the road. Their fascination with teenytinyittybitty motors with turbos instead of proper engines baffles me.

I can't hate on their diesels though... they run strong past 500,000 miles - at least for some 80s models.

We also had a couple of mid 90s model diesel VWs come for repairs at our shop... I have to say they are solid and dont include any of the silly gadgetry that goes out. I would enjoy a 5-speed diesel for daily driving.

I didnt say VW was a reliable car, I said VW/Audi makes some of the nicest looking interiors- check out ANY Audi interior, and the interior of the Touraeg or Passat, the quality of materials and fit finish leaves the Altima/Versa/sentra/exterra looking like walmart trash

It would be a dificult decision between the VW diesel, a Prius, and walking. I think 6 miles or less I would walk or bicycle if I could.

Indeed. Everyone needs to sit in a Phaeton and soak in the goodness. The engineering is suspect, but the attention to detail is insane.

The 1993 MPV was a minivan my parents purchased new in 1993 and sold a decade later. It was a big rolling box for a family of four. I fail to see the relevance.

No one here gave broad praise to any VW models. The praise is for their generally consistent interior craftsmanship.

No disrespect meant, but don't get me started on the G35-coupe-wanna-be Altima Coupe. The only merit it has is one can get the 4 cylinder that's what one wants. The interior has all the charm of a phone booth. The only worse Nissan is the excruciatingly bad Versa. Even a Mini Moke would be better.

But back to the VW interiors, I just need to note that my friend's Passat's regulators fail often and are more expensive than Q45 ones. And yes the Phaeton is nice on the inside, but as a $75K 5,500 lb. steel A8, it should be. Wonder how much those window regulators are?

Of course, anyone retard on the internet can post a picture and say an interior is good or bad. Its meaningless. You have to get off your butt and go sit inside to really know the difference.

Based on photos alone, it appears that the 1995 Lexus LS400 (top) has an interior that is inferior to the 1997 Q45.

The truth is that the LS400 goes above and beyond, placing soft-touch leather-covered surfaces behind door handles and other locations that can't be seen but are still felt. Spring-supported seats are unbelievably comfortable on long journeys, another thing that can't be seen. And the LS400's wood trim is thicker. The Y33 Q45's leather is hard and cheap and interior panel gaps are wider.

But sitting in and driving both cars also reveals that the LS400 is an absolute bore behind the wheel, no matter how nice it is, and costs unjustifiably more as a used car.

I know this personally because I briefly owned a '98 LS, and discarded it because of the Aisin gearbox.

Manix.. i have a "4 banger" by choice, i like the fuel economy and with my issues with "the man" i like it because it provides all the looks without all the kick of a bigger engine. Lets leave the wanna-be insults aside.

Jes i know the pic doesnt have merit, it just made me feel better posting it lol, especially bc the "as seen on tv" portion was part of the pic hehee.

Ive sat in several of those cars youve posted jes (o5 jetta and an eos.. ive been in a q45 but not recently to remember)... They are nice but not my style... mind you i wont drive a german car(or something that has ties to germany) for personal reasons.

Personal taste is what comes in here... sure Godiva chocolate is expensive and quality made... i still prefer a hershey bar.

I wouldnt call the altima dash "inferior" by any means.. its all taken in scope.. my last car was a 00 mustang... now THATS a car from top to bottom id use inferior to describe.

LOL... years ago I regularly parked it illegally in front of a building where I worked. Fox News Channel came to interview the CEO and took some footage of the building which was aired a couple times.

Mom sold it to Buddhist monks who now use it to haul gardening stuff.

I'm just saying that I don't like the dash cluster and such - it's not really appealing in my opinion.

Quality of materials used is a different story. While in no regards does the Nissan feel like a Kia, the Audi certianly uses good quality plastics and such.

I still love my altima interior - everything is intelligently placed, the Nav system is probably the easiest I've ever used, and it just flows. My opinion, I guess.

I know that. I wanted to see the interior of the model in the price range he was speaking of. We all know the reliability of VW are not up to par. The pics of the VW interior are not appealing to me personally. The best interior pic is that of the Y33....maybe I'm bias
