garage, driveway, or street these days. When were back home w/ relatives we work in a shop/barn.

At home we use an engine hoist now...In our RX7 days a few years ago on my family's farm we used a backhoe

I'm not even going to get started on the problems of using a backhoe as an engine hoist, or a forklift to lift a car.

The best place to work on a car is a flat, solid surface. Whether it be asphalt or concrete, in a garage or your driveway. Always use jack stands, and never put yourself under something that is being held up by hydrolics such as engine hoists or jacks. Lifts in a shop are different because they have stops to keep cars from sliding down should the hydrolics fail.

i work on my cars outside on a gravel driveway. the most creative way ive ever gotten an engine out of a car was dropping the front crossmember, hooking up a tow strap to my atv and yankin it out of under there, lol.

here's a pic of before i yanked the engine out of the wrecked 240 with my atv, lol

and i see no problem using a backhoe to lift the engine out, last time i checked my engine lift that was made to lift engines used a hydraulic pump. and he diddnt say lift the car with a forklift, he said lift the engine.

BTW the backhoe cherry picker is awesome

I don't see lifting either the car or the motor with a forklift a problem. Keeping it suspended by the forklift alone and working underneath is the stupid part.

Safety Police, not everyone has amenities to do the things they want to do.

This is where I work on my car, I'm lucky I have a designated area.

Also, Broadfield has the cleanest S13.....ever! Matts right there in 2nd.

Ha! Of course using a backhoe is not ideal, like I said, that was few years ago...and it was a stripped down rotary. Plus like someone said, a backhoes hydraulics are more powerful than a hoists. You could lift a rotary out out of the bay w/ two people and a board if you wanted to be caveman about it. Now a forklift...thats not a good idea if you are going to work under it (which is the only reason I could see why you'd be lifting a car with a forklift, hehe). And yes, always use jack stands on a level surface, you Vs car in a weight contest the car will always win. Keep it fun, but be safe!

We've gotten our own place and moved up in the world a bit since the farm/backhoe days....

Very Carefully......All torn apart and new one installed but no bolts installed and wires at midnight below zero in a snowing.raining conditions on a steep incline on the side of a freeway equels major suckage and just towed it (the conditions and didnt want the police to tow it and tow bill was way less than an impound charge) and I took a picture of it on the flatbed. I can post a pic I took with my camera tonight if needed

In my back parking spaces/ next to the shed. If it's too dark, cold, or raining I'll go to the car wash down the street for minor things. Hopefully I can use my friends garage and lift for the manual swap.

I pulled my first 2 240sx motors like that. Not really that accurate but it gets the job done.
