Hello,You are talking two different motors. The V8 in the M45 and the V6 in the M35. Could be wrong here, but, V8 traditionally will be at lower rpm's at the same given highway speed. How could it not matter which car you are talking about?M.L

I'm hitting about 3,100 RPM at 80 mph. Just checked today on the way in to work. Running the 18" wheel package. Still way to high, wish this had one more gear in transmission.

I think it's a disgrace. If you think about it, in the I35 the engine spins 3,000 RPM at 85 mph (not 80), and this is with a four-speed automatic and 17" wheels.

While I'd like to see a lower rpm as well, I can't see it making more than a 2 mpg difference at highwy speeds. Seems to me that there are a lot of other factors that would also need to be addressed to see a meaningful improvement.

I have to agree here. It will take more than an additional gear to bring the poor MPG down to make a significant difference. Infiniti engines love gasoline.

Agreed. All powerful V-8 engines love gas.

When crusing at constant speed, it is surprisingly reasonable usage though. Please do a search on an older post of mine, where I "measured" the gas use at various 5mph incremental speeds on my 2003 M45.

On my 2003 M45, with 245/45-18 tires, so I was probably a bit faster than the indicated 80mph, the tach was at an indicated 2900 rpm on level ground with the cruise control on.

Of course, these are all what the dials say ... there is some inaccuracy there, of course. And, the tire size from the OEM 234/45-18 is a slight error too.

I know this is an old discussion. I picked up 06 M35x three months ago, I just noticed now (I know, I know) that my rpm is over 3k at 80mph even when I let go the gas pedal. I have been driving many other cars, and none of them were running that high. 2.5 to 2.7k at most. I just want to know if this is an issue on Infiniti? or this is normal operation rpm.. thanks for any info.

This was the first thing I noticed about the M35 sport I recently bought. The RPM is higher than other cars at a given speed. My old 99 accord with 2.3L 4 cylinder runs at 2700 at 70MPH. My M35 runs at 2800 at the same speed on the same road

I guess M35 is all about performance and nothing about saving gas. There should have been a 6th gear as an overdrive option.

someone earlier in this thread said it would only give 2-3 mpg more to have another gear on the top end, but that is 8-12 % increase, which sounds good to me. I think the overall problem with the car is the weight.

On a separate note I LOVE that when going 65-70 when you push the gas... you GO, no waiting for shifting. My $.02

Really? On the G50 it is only 2500 rpm on stock tire size (unloaded 26" diameter).

70 mph is 3000 rpm

75 mph is 3100 rpm

80 mph is 3200 rpm

That can't possibly be correct. Look at the ratios of MPH/1K RPM.

23.333 MPH

24.195 MPH

25.000 MPH

Increased tire expansion won't account for those differences as the speeds are not that different.

Verified today, don't now what on earth my eyes were seeing yesterday.

2800 rpm = 70 mph

3000 rpm = 75 mph

3200 rpm = 80 mph approximately.

I just rented a 2007 350Z convertible and was shocked to find that it's geared taller than my M35! It was running about 2700 at 80mph compared to 3100 for my M35. You'd think Nissan would put the 3.55 rear into the Z (and maybe they do in some of them).

Not that it needed it though. On the way to SF airport I spanked an M3 convertible hard from 0-80, and he was trying.

I wish that insane 7500rpm 306hp motor from the >07 G35 and now Z car would find its way into the M.

C'mon Nissan - we need that first before some 400hp 5.0 V8 sucking about 12mpg....

Why? It's a much lighter car.

The 5L V8 actually gets 2 mpg more than the 4.5L one it replaces. I'll take it!

The Z's come with 3.50 rear ends. Was your rental automatic? My 6spd at 80 is right at 3000 rpms.

The HR motor is an awsome motor. Ive spanked E46 M3's with my 300 HP DE version Z.

Anyway, im thinking of getting rid of my Z and picking up a M45 and putting my Z rear end into it since afaik, M's dont come with VLSD's and the M45 has a 3.36 geared rear end.

my 2003 M45, with 245/45-18's (Yokohamas) was turning 2850 RPM at 80MPH -- speed verified dead nuts on with the Garmin stuck to the windshield tonight. Also sucked the mullet and baseball cap off some redneck in a 2002 Z28 tonight... stoplight to about 75. He had 4 or 5 inch pipes out the back and a pretty lumpy idle from whatever cams he installed. Skinny fronts and really wide rear BFG's. He wouldn't even look over at me at the next light. I had the transmission over in Manual, just incase - LOL.

So then, I pull into the In-n-Out burger place over by ASU tonight, with about 30 teens hanging outside, standing next to the spot I am pulling into (maybe 2 hours after this puppy was washed and waxed). My tinted windows are up but moonroof is open - so I can her them but they must have thought I couldn't hear them. One of the blonde babes says to her BF -- wow - that is a way cool car -- what is it? To which the clueless skateboarder says "I dunno, but it looks fast, huh?"

Rare that an old farts car gets raves from the kids -- makes an M owner proud!

Seems right on to me. I "measured" 2900 rpm by eye-balling the tach and the speed. Also using 245/45-18 tires (different brand and model).

Good Stuff™!

I have had one person tell me that my 2003 M45 looked like a good replacement for the 2006 M.

I guess they liked my car too.
