I've done lots of searching and can't find anything, and I know I've seen threads about it before. I think Yokota and E7-S14 have mentioned it before.

My igntion lock cylinder was not turning my starter switch all the way. I'd put the key in and I could turn the acc. and car on, but not start it unless I pushed really hard on the key and wiggled it around. Rather than buy a new igntion lock thing I decided to just put in a push button for the starter.

I probed the back of the starter switch with a screwdriver till I found the two wires for the starter, cut them and put them on a button. Well, it turned the starter, but I could not turn the car on. So I looked on the car side of the starter switch and consulted the FSM wiring diagram and found out one of the wires was not the right one. Fixed it up and now I could turn the car on but not start it. Then I realized it takes three wires to run the starter (all three that I have now cut). Apparently things have to be connected in the starter switch or something. So, I took the 3rd wire and in the middle of it ran a wire over to the switch so that when I start the car all three wires are connected. Viola, the car turns on and starts.

However, the timings off, it's missing and backfiring like crazy. I cut the third wire that I spliced over to the push button and BAM, car instantly smooths out.

So, how do I do this with just one button? I could theoretically do it with a button and a toggle (that connects the 3rd wire and then after the car has started disconnects it)....but that's uh, ghetto.

Any ideas NICO? In exchange for your help, me love you long time. <3

use a relay like this:

IIRC black/white is ignition on and black/yellow is the starter wire

excuse my mspaint skills

this is a better picture i think.

if you wire it up like this. you put your ignition to ON which would energize the relay but would not do anything because it is not grounded. when you press the switch you provide ground for the relay which would allow the voltage to pass from the ignition on to the starter which would turn your car on.

I got it without a relay! Thanks though guys.

Black/Yellow and Black/White get spliced together and to one terminal on the push button. Spliced a wire into Black/Red and and ran it over to the other terminal on the switch.

Starts the car and doesn't **** with the timing.

i would suggest you use a relay since most relays are a 30Amped Relay so itll give you some what of a protection just incase

I didn't think I needed a relay because the wiring diagram shows this stuff going to a relay anyway. All the button has done is replaced the same step within the switch.

i didnt use a rely with mine....

my ignition switch went bad (i could still turn on the accesories but the starter wouldnt turn. i cant remember exactly what i did (i have to look at it again)

i spliced one wire into the wire coming off of the starter and i ran one wire from where a wire bolts up to the starter.

both wires were run into the cockpit and connected to a momentary contact button.

has worked ever since for me....

and plus, you still need the keys for the car to run.

i will take some pictures and make a diagram later.

Sounds like what I did, except I did it all on the cockpit side within the steering column.

I think the reason for using a relay is so that the amperage goes through the relay itself and not the ignition start button. I guess it is more of a way to keep the contacts in the start button from burning up.

if you have a switch rated for that kind of amperage that is fine. however, most switches are not. thats what the relay is for.

exactly. finally someone who knows about electrical systems

you have a chance to burn up the switch. they are only rated for like 5 amps and you drawing about 15-20amps through it. its one of those, rather be safe than sorry thing.

dude. my diagram is basically a writeup. for the s14 wire colors might be different but thats it.

Yeah most of the switches were 3 and 6 amps, so I went to an electronics store and got a 15amp. I'll do a mini write-up tomorrow but it's really not hard at all.

lol you guys act like this stuff is hella complicated. If you can understand the basics then car electronics is pretty simple.

well if you got a 15amp, you should be good i THINK.

so you put the key in, then press the button to start the car, then to turn off the car, just take the key out?

you put the key to the ON position, hit the switch (its just like turning the key to start), turn off the car with the key.

Yes, listen to everything kamikazestorm says. Put your key in, turn it to acc, then to on, but instead of turning it one more time to start you just push the button. Then just turn your car off like normal.

I mounted mine to the bottom half of the steering column cover right under the key hole, so I put my key in and turn it with my thumb and index finger and push the button in with my middle finger.

And I think I'll be fine with the 15A for as short a time as the loop is actually closed? Maybe not. It was a 7 dollar button haha. If it fails I'll get a new one and a relay.

Duce, :p
