I'm considering ordering 2 JDM takeout motors at the same time, to save some $ and because a local buddy needs an engine for his 90 Q.

However, he doesn't want to deal with chain guides.

So, the question is, can the 94-95 work in a 90 chassis without any issues?

Not without harness issues. There are a couple old posts about it - can be a bit of a nightmare. Here's a recent thread:

It's been done, but I think to "simplify" things he swapped his heads onto the 94 motor.

Chain guides job would be a lot easier with the engine out...

Why not get a pre 93 JDM engine(s) and do the guides before dropping it/them in?

Retard garage project? Shouldn't take long to change guides on a removed engine...

No matter which family version one selects always good to pull front cover and check/change oil chain and tensioner.

A ten to 12 year old engine needs treating [inspections] like a 10-12 year old engine.

Just because a JDM has < 60k doesn't mean these were easy miles.......chilly weather, extreme idling, if used as limo/exec car and just brutal traffic in any case.

I'm not sure we have any conditions like Tokyo in US unless maybe a Q was used in Manhattan as a limo

Thanks Dennis - Good info.

So, I'll see if I can get a "discount" by ordering a 90-93 AND a 94-95, and both will get gone through prior to installation.

You may want to go with one of those shops that specializes in replacement of Jap engines. That way the parts and labor are warrantied and you should be able to get a pretty good discount on both..

I'll be doing the labor, I simply can't see paying someone over a grand to do it...

UPDATED question:

Looks like I can ONLY get a 90-93 takeout, but the two I'm looking at have 25K and 30K miles, respectively.

So, what kind of hassles will I run into putting the 90-93 engine in my 95?

(EDIT: I'll be doing chain guides on both motors before install)

There was a guy in California that was selling new '94 long blocks on Ebay a few months ago. Besides the timing guides there are a few connectors eg. CAS sensor, that are different. Also keep in mind that 90-93 injectors do not like ethanol.

Youll have to splice some connectors... youll probably want to use the 94-96 coil packs since the connectors are different too..

its about like an SR swap.
