ok. i recently swapped my rb20 from one s13 to a newer cleaner frame. while it was out, i replaced the clutch and throwout bearing. the throwout bearing seemed to be in good shape, but i changed it because before i pulled the engine, whenever i was not on the clutch, there was a horrible whining noise. now that the engine is in the new car and everything is hooked up and running, it is still doing it. the new throwout bearing has 0 miles on it and it is still making that noise. i'm thinking it could be the pilot bushing, as that is the only part i didnt replace. does anybody have any input on this, and if indeed you do think it is the pilot bushing, which one will work?? KA, Z32 N/A, or do i have to get rb20det one? thanks very much, any input is appreciated.

does it make the noise when the clutch is pushed in or when it is not? is there a time when the noise goes away (like when the clutch is released or pushed in)? if i recall correctly it could also be a thrust bearing making the noise, can anyone else verify this?

Valley, he already answered that. So, when the transmission is engaged, there is whining, which could be just about any bearing in the transmission (except for the mainshaft bearings).

Could also be caused by your TO bearing rubbing on something, but that's not likely, and anyways, your TO bearing has no load until you push in the clutch pedal.

Wouldn't be the pilot bushing since that spins with the flywheel and could thus only make noise when the clutch is pushed in.

My KA setup also made a whining noise when in neutral, clutch out. But I fixed it by swapping in the RB20

was the tob seated properly?jp mentioned to me that he did a rb25 swap and the tob seemed to have warped or something......might just be improperly seated.

seems unlikely that it is not seated properly because it did this before i changed the throwout bearing and after. i will get a video today of the noise to maybe help figure out what it could be. and to make it clear, the noise happens when the clutch is not pushed in. this happens not only in neutral, but when in gear and driving too. thanks guys for ur input.

Yes, so the input shaft is engaged. Could be input shaft bearings or layshaft bearings, but I am guessing it has nothing to do with the clutch, TO bearing, pilot bushing, or flywheel.

ive got the same issue, except it sounds like a baseball card hitting a bike tire spokes. most said tob, so i replaced that along with my clutch and flywheel, left pilot bushing in because it was replaced 400 mi ago, same thing. very frustrating. the sound goes away if i push the clutch pedal in barely, like 2cm. not meaning to hijack but we share quite a similar problem.

Was the input shaft greased when you took it out? and did you grease it before you put it back in? i have heard of people making this mistake and it was something i was unaware of for quite sometime.

I had this issue after i replaced my clutch/bearing and reused the bushing. after a while it went away and would make whine noise if i didnt match rpm(upshifting if rpm was 1k or so above what it should be in gear i put it in).

Then i swapped new KA new clutch and new bushing and didnt hear it since. BUT i know my transmission bearings are very worn out. So shaft having too much play(from not being supported by the bushing) could in turn cause bearings to make more noise then normal...not that much tho.

Or you could have bent the clutch disc when putting transmission in.(by letting transmission hang in the clutch by the input shaft while sliding it in )
