I was just recently informed about the benefits of mixing acetone in your gas, and when I started using it I instantly noticed a difference. The exceleration was smoother, the car seemed a little peppier, and the gas mileage skyrocketed. Yesterday, I drove around 330 miles from Madison, IN to Ft Wayne and then to Logansport. It ended up being about 15/85 city/highway miles and I got around 26 MPG. I had the A/C on the entire time, and had multiple WOT runs during passes. In the middle of that trip, there was also a time when I was stopped for nearly 30 minutes in a traffic jam!

I again tested it on the way home. I tried it without airconditioning for the majority of the trip. I didn't have nearly as many WOT runs, but still had about 3 to 4. On the way home my gas mileage was 29 MPG!!! It was amazing! I now get better gas mileage with about a 50/50 hwy/city mix than I did in all highway driving. The mixture I used is around 2.5 ounces per 10 gallons of fuel and my Q is a Y33.

seems impossible,as the injector flow amount is computer controlled to a precise amount, based on rpm, airflow thru the maf,etc-the injectors dont know what fuel mix is flowing thru them.

Is the miles/kilometers setting in the wrong position?

I dont know if acetone is safe to use in the fuel system. I know most kinds of alcohol are bad, so I would assume acetone is the same. I think methanol is the only one used in racing.

Where did you hear about this... do you have any links to web pages that discuss how this works? Very interesting...

No its NOT impossible - I have done the same thing - just try it. I get about 26-29 MPG calculated in miles not km! on my 97 Q. Acetone is not an alcohol; its a ketone. Extensive use of methanol WILL damage the oxygen sensors. IPA is less harmful. I have no data on ketones, however, I do not know what effect they would have on the injectors or the pump. The flashpoint of acetone is lower than typical gas - maybe the reason why the difference is seen in the MPG.

I would however, recommend that you not use acetone in every tank full; I have started to alternate my acetone addition. Until I find or generate some useful data, I dont want to damage anything in the fuel path.

The conversion is exactly what the fuel companies dont want posted on boards!!!

Just to note - We all didn't buy a Q to get 50 MPG out of it!!!! Lets get real - We like power, and all other things associated with the Q . We didnt perform this experiment to see how much MPG you can get out of the Q.

But that being said - acetone provides extra juice when you're in the mood for some WOT action. I would use it only when you feel you need that extra boost to whip some cocky dudes as* on a red light. So lets keep this conversion within our group and not send it to someone in the corvette section.

Start with the lubedev article. I personally believe the release of surface tension [a la water wetter].

I have read that some ppl have used acetone in every tank of gas for the entire life of their vehicles. Some of them up to 300,000 miles! Most of the stuff I read was personal experience with using it. I know for now I am going to keep using it. My calculations were made correctly. My car doesn't read kilometers, only miles.

Didn't work for me.............no changes in 5 tank fulls over 2 weeks [1500 miles of mixed driving] [each day 60 miles at 70 mph] and [ 60 miles in slow traffic]............ ~~100 gallons of gas with a liter of Acetone USP.......0.25%.

Alternated weeks with BG44K at 11 ounces per 2560 ounces of gasoline ~~0.4%.

Once the systems are clean they are clean, thus no magic here...........as we all know the O2/ecu system limits the cruise leanness to 14.7AF or 14.0 [with oxygenates] to minimize Nox and extend CAT life. So unless you can fool the O2/ecu into running leaner and not hurt the cats...........leanness is hard to achieve.

If you turn off 1 injector [run on 7] you can achieve close to 10-11% [pick the lowest compresion one] improvement..........4.5 liters must be fed.

The other thread is a great read...

I think like dennis said, theres no harm in trying it. However if your fuel system is already clean then it may not do any good??

Whatever the case may be, im going to pick up some acetone and we'll see what happens.... Still have a can of 44k on my desk. People think I have a beer on my desk at all times until people read that it says "Flammable, fatal if swallowed" Maybe they should put that on wiskey containers?

At least this is a harmless experiment!!! Next fillup im going to add 6 OZ

Probably more than you'd ever want to know about acetone. By the way, "Bob is the oil guy" is the most interesting forum on the web, except, of course for this one. - Pat

Good read pat...

I read 3-4 posts on NICO about this and a handful over there, and from what I can tell, the acetone is supposed to maybe do something to counteract the oxygenates in crappy fuel.... No one seems to agree on what it actually does. In theory, it is actually taking away energy, because it contains less energy than gasoline does... I know that the members that are trying it here arent making the results up... Zinkie did a good job in that he drove nearly the same both times....

However the concentrations are such that if BG44k doesnt make any difference, then this probably wont either... On my old Q it did, on this Q it doesnt (whihc needs the MPG boost more than the old one!)...

As cheap as acetone is, ill just buy some and toss it in there with the 44k... Ill use the rest to take the paint off my wheels so ican get them all shiney!!! Worst case scenario, i lost another $10 at walmart... Fortunately i know its not going to hurt nissan plastic stuff since we use 44k, and the guys here have tried it...

excellent. we are getting more data points now!I'm very intrigued that this didn't work for Dennis. Here's my supposition....

I've actually tried this in two completely different regions: Ca, and Florida.Florida data: 2004 Mercury villager [or whatever they call it now] rental. 11000 miles on the odo. race trac 87 octane. 8 oz ace hardware acetone on 24 gallons (too much, perhaps?). felt zero part throttle difference. car had a mini computer and i played extensively with the instantaneous/short average mpg. no measurable change vs. non-acetone config.

California data: (1)-2003 G35 bone stock, 26000 miles. chevron 91. 4 oz Klean-strip acetone on 20 gal. immediately felt part throttle improved response. no 'feel' difference at wot. mileage [not completely accurate] 15.9 for that tank in an urban cycle that usually averages 13.5 to 15.

(2)- 1994 Q45a, bone stock, 102600 miles. chevron 91. 5 oz on 22.5 gal. felt minor part throttle response improvement. can't tell yet on mileage for the urban cycle--still burning this tank, but does not seem significantly better mileage wise.

(3) back to the G35-- vallejo 91 (2 tanks later). 4 oz on 20 gal. significant part and wot throttle response improvement. still burning this tank. don't know about mileage yet.

not completely scientific, i know--just observing that i think it's the california crap gas that is benefitting more than the florida [and maybe georgia in the case of tech]. looking forward to more data points coming in from different regions.

Autozone has it for about $8 something a gallon. A friend of mine has used it for several months in his Prius and has tried gas from several states. He claims up to 20% increase when using Colorado gas that has at least 10% ethanol. I've run it with equal amounts of BG 44K and noticed some improvement in mileage and power but I haven't measured how much.

Anyone use this stuff?

Appears to have a lot of recommendations on the "Bob is the oil guy" website.

BAH HUMBUG. If acetone as such low dosages really improved fuuel economy, al gasolines would have it because Detroit would have insisted on it to improve emissions and fuel economy. Few people realize that the Detroit club has dictated the fuel composition to a large degree in search of lower emissions. If the car had dirty intake valves and injectors, acetone will certainly remove the varnish and gum. Its an excellent solvent for varnish and gumand paint, and 'rubber' hoses and timing chain guide plastic and ...... Not a very nice thing to have in your fuel system IMHO.

I think the main reason it isn't added to all gasoline is because of the potential for damage in certain untested vehicles and the fact that different vehicles tend to work better with different ratios of acetone in the fuel. I have heard of people using anywhere from 1-4 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons. If people go above the 'sweet spot' for their vehicle the mileage may actually decrease.

I'll be the tester on the south side using Texas gas.

I bought a gallon (32 oz.) of Klean-strip Acetone at Wal-mart last night for $4.97. My friend wanted to use it right away so we put 5 oz. of acetone in his '98 GS400 and fill up the tank with Shell gas (20 gallons capacity). He called me when he got home and said that his computer showed the mileage he never dream of before . I forgot to get the exactly number of mileage increase that he told me, will ask him this evening. The most important thing he said was that the initial throttle reponse was much faster.

I can't wait to burn out this current tank of Exxon gas in my car (in order to calculate the mileage with the 4.083 diff) so I can put some acetone in there. Anyone need me to run an errand to Dallas or Austin?

Well, I'm back to my normal daily driving routine and I am still seeing amazing results. The drive mixture is about 35/65 city/hwy. My city miles are extremely hard miles going up and down big hills. The highway miles consist of cruising at around 60-65, w/ AC on, and probably 5 complete stops per 50 miles. I am still getting about 26 mpg or more. I don't even see mileage like that directly after or during the use of BG 44k. I normally get between 20 and 21.5 mpg in similar driving conditions. In the city, I used to get as few as 13 mpg.

Throttle response is much better in my 89 Cherokee w/4.0L @ 3oz. per 10 gal.No mi. sheet yet. Haven't tried it in my Q yet.

Seems to me the vapor pressure is higher, when the gas cap is unscrewed there is a noticeably greater hiss time. So there may be an assist to the pump via pressure.

I forgot that the last time I filled up, it was with mid grade. All of my driving lately as been in town, so I've been getting 11mpg. I'll have to try it on my cross-country road trip next week.

Wish I was an acetone supplier with the INET selling so many new customers. If I could persuade only 1/10 of 1% of drivers to try some [ONCE] [Buy a gallon] that would net $1,000,000 [gross].
