Hello all. I searched a bit for smog issues with the SR20 and all I turned up were threads about the harsh Cali Emission Standards and the SR.

Does anyone know if the SR20 will pass the Chicago/Illinois Smog testing? It would be in a '95 240 so it would only be sniffer tested.

thanks in advance,grimple1

This is a touchy subject for me. I too live in the Chicagoland area and it took me four times to pass emissions. I have a long list of things I did to pass, but some others have been more lucky. I would suggest the following:

-loosen the bolts between the dp and cat-if you don't have a cat, GET ONE-run a trial of Seafoam (any automotive store will have it)-get a bottle of this stuff that says in bold print "gaurenteed to pass emissions" (don't know the exact name)-get some bling bling 18's and tell them not to put it on the rollers, you want whats called a Bar 90 test (be insistent and have matching wheels on all four corners

This is what I did to pass. I'm not sure if ALL of this is necessary, but this is what it took for my SR with bolt-ons to pass. I wish you the best of luck as I know what a headache it can be. Keep me posted.

Anyone ever try bribing the guy? Seems like it would be easier than buying 18"s

i live in vancouver, bc and the testing here is as harsh as california emissions. these are some of the things we do to pass:

-get some Methyl-hydrate and pour a bottle of it into your tank, along with the highest grade fuel you can get... between 94 octane and the methyl-hydrate you'll be runnin super hot and real clean.

-another good thing to do is take your car for a really spirited drive before getting the testing, get the engine as hot as possible cause it'll run cleaner as well.

-and as for the 18" rims, that's not necessarily the factor it's the profile of the tires that matters... if you're runnin 35 profile tires they won't put you on the rollers cause they'll damage the rims otherwise, you might be able to fight it with 40's

-and loosening the bolts a little (between cat and dp) is a good trick, as long as it's not too obvious that there's a huge frickin gap in your exhaust

as for bribing the guy, goodluck with that the dude is risking his job and probably a $10,000 fine if he gets caught a friend of mine worked at the "aircare" place that i went to and he passed me, by going too fast on the rollers and by pulling out the sensor that was in my exhaust pipe and letting my car idle into the open air by reading the results you'd swear i had a hydrogen powered car or a toyota echo or somethin gay like that...
