Post Title: squeaking under the hood Posted by:saeedakobiakov at 9:43 AM 6/25/2009 Hello, i have 03 m 45 with 81k on it. i have squeaking under the hood right where the all the belts are. it used to do it only when it rained, so i put new belts. now its doing all the time. My mechanic said it could be idler or tensioner pulley. Please let me know what i should do. Thanks, caug.

Your best bet is to get a mechanic's stethoscope like this and carefully (as in avoiding belts fans and other rotating items) listen to each idler pully while the car is running.
You could also remove each pully and listen for roughness and grinding when you turn them by hand - but my way avoids disassembling and reassembling the car with a bad pully while you wait for the part to arrive if it's not immediately available.
