Post Title: vert "CHAT"
Posted by: the vert at 6:47 PM 5/6/2009

I thought it would be cool if you guys had a chat on here. This way there is no one subject to talk about. Just ask a question and get an answer kind of deal.

Just thought I would introduce myself just bought my vert about a month ago and I love it. My name is Josh im in the Army, im stationed in fort bragg NC. I hope you guys dont mind this, I thought it would be neat.

Post Title:

This will probably fail horribly. Not that much traffic in here for a chat.

Post Title: Re: (the vert)

Hey and welcome to another NC vert. Dang, the shipping is almost as much as the seats! Maybe look for some S14 seats locally first.

As far as the chat - yeah, I'm with Biggie here. Most people "chat" via posts. With so many members you'll typically get an answer quickly. Also check out the SEARCH feature and use it liberally - most of your questions have already been asked and answered.

Finally, post up some pics of the before and after. People here understand that all our verts are works in progress and it's always good to see from whence they came.

Welcome!

Post Title:
Posted by: the vert at 10:05 PM 5/7/2009

yea I was not sure on how many there was of us. But I have learned from other forums to search before making a thread. As far as the seats im not a huge fan of the S14 seats, and I would also need to reupholster the seats.

You all will see my plans later on down the road.

After motor swap, 5 speed swap, 5 lug swap, z brakes upgrade and durring door swap...

Better pictures to come later....

And like every 240 out there... Still a work in progress....

Is there a way that I can do the z32 brake conversion and keep my 4 lug cause I just had my wheels powdered coating white and they look really good? Are there any rotors that are the same sixe as the z32 that are 4 lug?

You can buy the Z32 rotors predrilled for 4 lug, or buy them and find someone to drill them.

Or if you're feeling really bold you can drill them out yourself.

I haven't driven my vert in MONTHS.
I loaned mine to my father when his Infiniti M30 went down and now I've been stuck in my S14.5 Poor me, right?

I need your opions. I was thinking about rebuilding the KA and thought about putting stronger rods and pistons in the block, also building the head, and boosting it later down the road. From your experiences and knowldege about the 240 is a boosted/built KA better or worse than a boosted/built SR?

It is pretty much personal preference. Both are good.

That is so cool! Talk about a 240 owner right there. Someone should make one of those motivational picture things about it. Typical 240 owner with more parts off the cars then on them. lol.

Ok guess what do you tune with im a honda guy and im used to hondata which is the best but I just need a piggy back that I can tune air to fuel and timing. Also what are some good launch controllers like 2 step?

went out and bought my first part for my 5-speed swap, clutch pedal assembly. Any of you had any experience with the AEM fuel and ignition controller?

Not really. I personally have a KA-T car, an SR car, and a RB car. Heres what I've found in my own experience.

1. KA-T- you already have the motor, the car is wired for it, parts are finally readily available and affordable so it breaks down like this

2. SR20- you pay for a motor set, which will run you from $1500-$4000 depending on who screws you for it, then you can put it in yourself if you know how, or you pay someone around $1000 to do it for you including wiring. And when its all said and done, you've for 205hp.

3. RBXX- no matter what, you won't get out for under $3500 and a good bit of work, and then if you make the mistake of a stock RB20, refer to #2.

So in the end, my personal view, and I stress that its just my personal view, if you have a DOHC KA, and aren't a super baller with money to just piss away, you're better off to build that, not only is it bigger displacement, but for the $2500 it would take to do a basic SR swap (and I mean motor set, wiring, motor mounts, FMIC/SMIC, DP, and the other odds and ends) you can have a 300whp or more KA-T set up. I'm sure I'll get flamed out the door for this from the SR fan boys, but its pretty much truth. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my SR car, I just wish it would have come in all my cars instead of having to fork over a couple grand just to get to the starting point.

The FIC gets very very mixed reviews, I've dealt with them on a Supra and a IS300 and both were bad experiences. Then in the same few weeks a customer had it on a car that he tuned and it seems to work great for what he needed. Have you googled the reviews of it?

Out of interest, what sort of costs are you looking at for a KA-T conversion??

Over the pond you can pick up a decent SR for £600 with a loom, and 350hp out of it is only another £750 odd. We dont see many KA's, but the general opinion over here is "truck engine" - how do they compare??

KADET can = SRDET. The SR is much more expensive here. For a good SR swap with basic bolton upgrades will be close to $5k, especially if labor is paid for.

There are plenty of high hp built KA-Ts, it is pretty much personal preference here. The SR bing a little higher revving, but the KA having more torgue especially in lower RPMs.

If you have the budget for an SR, just put that money into internals on your KA and geta basic turbo kit together. That way you'll be fresher, stronger and ready for more boost. Oh, and trq is a good thing.

whats up nicoclub? im lookin to get a 240sx vert and do a manual swap into it. so what do you think would be better to do the swap myself or get one that is alread converted

Post Title:
Posted by: the vert at 4:27 PM 5/22/2009

well the hard part is finding one that has a 5 speed already done i mean finding a nice 240sx convertible is hard enough trust me I know. I got lucky and found mine and only paid 3300 for it. I think I paid a little much for it. The tranny is going out on me the motor leaks oil, but it has a brand new top that works, came with an alarm and sound system.

Ok well here she is when I first got her. Her name is Lucy btw I will post some pictures when I get my wheels on with the way she sits now.

[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]

I got the wheels powdered coated and need to go pick them up and put new tires on them. Next on the list is a 5 speed swap I figured out its going to cost me around 2 grand. I already have hatch door panels but I am going to wait till I have enough money to get new seats and pretty much redo the whole interior.

Post Title:
Posted by: TIMELSS_vert at 6:40 PM 5/22/2009

efkiid86 - it will be easier to find one and do it your self. If you are even slightly mechanically inclined, the write ups on here can get you through it. Depending on the season the car is bought in, where its from and it's condition, expect to pay 2000-3500 for a stock one. Pristine, low mileage cars can go for even more!

I need paint badly, its peeling off the bumpers and need to straighten out my bad pull on front fenders. I'm happy with the interior except for getting the 5spd in, hopefully that will be by the end of summer.

yea I know what you mean by needing a new paint job. Is there a way that I can get rid of the black strip going down side and to make it flush with the rest of the body? I know I could prob use bondo but just wondering if there is another way.

+1 for the panels

I had help with the passenger's side but I put the drivers side on by myself It wasn't 2 bad only part that sucked was we forgot to pull out the wiring before unbolting the passengers door.... That was a pain but it only gets better with time right one of these day's she'll be lookin good....

Post Title: Re: (cmoody2006)
Posted by: nissan_star at 4:26 PM 5/29/2009

did you just leave the wiring from the vert in there and hook it up to the new door?
Reason I am asking is because i did the swap and want to see if anyone kept the coupe wiring harness and spliced it in some how to the existing vert one. Right now my only problem with it is that when I lock/unlock the door on the driver side it doesn't auto lock/unlock the pass. side with it.

lol, so you have to walk to the pass. side to unlock the door then walk around to the drivers side to get in?
I took the locks out of my OG doors then put them in to my coupe doors. I think you can swap the locks from pass. to driver side too, I remember being very careful not to switch mine because they looked so similar

Also i got my new spl subframe spacers in the mail today

Then I got bored the other day....

Messed up the rocker panel and the passengers side door....

Rims look nice...can't wait to see them with tires and mounted on your car. Did you use a local shop to powder coat? If so was it in the "Fayettenam" area or closer to the Charlotte area? I was also wondering if the shop had any concerns about powder coating rims. I've heard some places don't like to do rims because when you bake the rims it can cause them to get brittle. But I don't know anything about this...just what I've read on some forums. Keep us posted.

Post Title: Re: (wmdavis007)
Posted by: 240daveTX at 7:47 PM 6/25/2009

i used to do coatings and being brittle after bake has never been a problem.

i only baked normal powders at 300 degrees. i highly doubt that is hot enough to mess up the molecular structure of the wheels.

Cool...that's what I was thinking as well...I think some people were just putting out bogus info about powder coating. Brake temps well exceed 300 degrees and though I'm sure rim temps don't reach that, I wouldn't think the baking temp would effect the rims. I've had a few items on my car powder coated and plan to have a few more things done but I would like to find a good shop that does it locally so I don't have to pay shipping. Thanks again for the info 240daveTX .

Any of our sponsors (look on the right).

Weatherstriping may have to be custom or ebay. New door panels probably don't exsist, best bet is to find used and/or get an upohlstery shop.

Check ebay/craigslist and our classifieds for a used AT tranny. Should be many around due to 5-speed swaps, any '91-'94 AT tranny will work.

looks like its black.

the white coated wheels look good

Post Title:

yea, its just black, dont know why though. It was like that when I bought the car. Getting ready for a 5 speed swap. Found one close by for 400 bucks. I just have to buy a new clutch. What is a cheap clutch that is pretty good? Thanks for all the positive comments on the wheels. I know its not that common at least not in my area.

Get you an Exedy clutch kit. You can get an OEM one for about $190 or you can get a High Performance Stage 1 for about $335. Here is a link to the OEM replacement clutch: http://www.frsport.com/Exedy-O....html
It's the one I went with when I did my 5-speed swap and it works great.

got a question guys im temp gauge will go all the way up and I will pull over, pop the hood and the motor will feel normal. Im thinking it might be my thermostat but I just had a shop put a new one in. Could it be that they could have installed it wrong?

Post Title: Re: (the vert)
Posted by: donut86 at 1:03 AM 7/13/2009

you could try the coolant temp sensor...I just bought one for about $15

Most likely an air bubble in the coolant system. Be careful, could overheat easily.

Post Title:
Posted by: the vert at 11:42 AM 7/13/2009

I do I get rid of the air bubbles in the system?

Post Title: Re: (the vert)
Posted by: 240daveTX at 12:49 PM 7/13/2009

there should be a bleed screw at the front of the intake manifold at the front

Post Title:
Posted by: biggie at 1:43 PM 7/13/2009

Usually the bleed screw doesn't get it all out.

One way is to jack up the front end(or park on incline), put a big funnel in the rad and put coolant in the funnel. Run the car to get the thermostat open and press the top hose to force air out.

There are muliple methods as the KADE is well known for air bubbles.

"the vert", since you are NC I can probably get you in touch with some people to help, just send me an email if you need to.

My buddy works at a chassis shop and he is going make me a custom roll cage for just the rear. Should have it installed and powder coated in Setember. We are taking all the mounts for the rear seats out so the trunk will be open to the rest of the interior and going to smooth the humps a little and run new carpet from the firewall all the way back to the trunk. Then I am going to tuck all the wires in the back to the sides where you wont be able to see them. Should be fun. I have a set of hatch door panels I am putting on and going with a 4 point harness. I will keep everyone updated. I having the cage powder coated the same color as my wheels. I think its going to look really good. Then new seats and I might fibers glass my door panels and quarter panels as well, make the quarter panels on piece insted of having the slit down the top of them.

Hey guys, I am the new owner of a vert as well, no pics yet, not really worth of them, imagine a red body, black trunk lid white front bumper green dented fenders and, random black paint spots over rusted areas, and thats what it looks like, brand new top though.... anyone know an easy way to fix rust between the windshield and the front of the roof, like the trim section around the windshield that the roof hooks to when it closes?

Edit: forgot it also has grey coupe doors on it as well, and no seatbelts or back seat, and the seatbelts arent mounted correctly yet either, definitely a work in progress....

youre going to have to remove the trim...I saw a thread on removing it around here not too long ago.

edit: here is the one I saw: http://forums.nicoclub.com/zer...moval

Post Title:

yea ive been waiting on holemilk to do the writeup on it, i might have to take the windshield out as well to do the repair.... its a pretty good sized spot that needs replaced, but i dont plan on it being done for quite some time so I'm in no rush, just gotta make sure to get it done right so it lasts me a long time, ill create a thread one of these days when i find a camera showing what I have to repair on it and have my own build thread....

Post Title: Re: (RM12577)

I have one forming as well...I hit it with 220 grit as well as I could. Ill get around to fixing it once I start driving the car. I guess I might have to do the writeup if I can find my harness to get the car running.

Post Title:
Posted by: the vert at 8:53 PM 8/2/2009

I think I might pick up a pair of corbeau A4 seats at the end of the the month as well as the harness. I going to make my brackets myself cause I heard the ones they have put you up really high. Im 6 ft. and dont need to sit any higher.

Thanks guys. Well decided to do a rebuild/build then boost later on. I plan on having HRT build my motor when I get my taxes back next year. Then I will boost later. Also will do a 5-speed swap. Can't wait.

Wow.. I'd have to say I've never seen green wheels on a black car before. Looks unique!

I do like the Z32 wheels! Some spacers in the rear would be nice for them.

How did you do your 5 lug conversion? Z32 parts?

ummm.... yea....

It's got a welded diff stage, 4 clutch, megan racing short shifter - custom cut so it's even shorter, tien inner and outter tie rod's, xspower intercooler no turbo anymore it blew so I reverted it back to N/A for the time being... It's a sohc car

front and rear strut tower bars and c-pillar bar
Put all my zebra interior in it and my led blue cluster lights

I'll be pickin up my new log manifold for my dohc and my roll cage in a couple weeks

Got my new radiator core support section that I needed.

Just gotta get my dude to bring over his welder when I get everything together for the vert

So whats going on with the vert besides a new radiator core support? I need to learn how to weld. It would make everything so much more fun also knowing that its all custom.
