This is a rare opportunity to run your own car as many times as you want on a wickedly fun autocross course or display your drifting skiils without any fear of getting arrested. Or you can do both! We're talking unlimited runs over two days. No special modifications required for most cars, and the best part is it's free with your paid admission to the Carlisle Performance and Style show (which runs May 9-11).
If you’re interested in drifting/autocrossing your own car while attending big Carlisle Performance and Style show, this is place to do it.
SIGNING UP
If you are already a member of NICO, it’s very easy. Just create a post on this thread (using the reply or quote buttons) and simply let us know that you’re interested in doing it..and you’re in. There are no fees or penalties if you don’t show up (except for some possible teasing by your fellow NICOnauts) We do ask that you try to volunteer some time to help staff the event. For example, If you’re planning to just drift, we hope you will help staff the autocross sessions, and vice versa. We appreciate any help you can provide.
If you are not a member of NICO, it’s also very easy. Please take a few moments to register with NICO at the following link.
http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerouser?cmd=register
NICOclub is completely free. There are no obligations, no fees, no hidden charges, no junk mail. You do not need to own a Nissan or Infiniti to participate in this event.
Once you've registered with NICO, please return to this very thread. That link is below.
http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread/310483

We will extract the rest of your information from the NICO profile that you just created. Please feel free to ask any questions or make suggestions by posting on this thread as well. It will be closely monitored by the NICO Staff. We also invite you to explore the world of NICO which is a large friendly community of Nissan/Infiniti enthusiasts.
You can also register free without formally joining NICO by showing up in person with your car at the NICOfest tent located at the Carlisle track (northside of the property) on Friday May 9th. The first day of the Carlisle Performance and Style show. Walk-ins on Saturday/Sunday are also all welcome, but will be charged a nominal fee to participate.

CAR "TECH" REQUIREMENTS
Here is what will be required to pass the technical inspection. Essentially if your car can pass a state inspection, it should pass tech.
Engine compartment: no leaks, fluids okay, belts tight, throttle free, no cheap tape on hoses.
Brakes: fluid clean, full.
Brake lights/signals: operational
Battery: mounted securely
Wipers: functional
Tires: legal tread, no cuts, no cord showing, no dry rot

Trunk : emptied, and secured
Helmet: SA95/M95 ratings or newer. No cracks. DOT/SAE rated helmets are not acceptable,
Gas cap : present and secured.
VOLUNTEERS
Since this is a free event, we’ll need volunteers to make it happen.
Volunteers are naturally welcome to drive. And with the track open for so many hours, we’ll need everyone to volunteer some time. Here are the areas where we are asking for volunteer help
Tech inspector: working a simple checklist, don’t need to be a mechanic.
Registration: Drivers need to register after passing tech, pretty straight forward. Involves signing and filing waiver forms, issuing numbers and wristbands.
Time Keepers for autocross. Operate stopwatch, update clipboard. .
Corner workers: for safety, picking up cones, watching for debris, spin outs, fluids, etc.
Photographer: to post shots on NICO’s website
Starter: In charge of safety, launches drivers. Coordinates with corner workers.
OTHER DETAILS
You will go thru tech prior to registration. Once you, your car, and your helmet pass tech, you then register at the tent a few feet away, where you will sign waivers and be issued a wrist band and number for your car (the numbers are to be taped to the inside of the side rear windows. Please wear the wrist band for the duration of the event.
You only need to register once for the duration of the event.
The Carlisle main gates will open at 0800 both days. the official address is as follows:.
Carlisle Fairgrounds
1000 Bryn Mawr Road
Carlisle PA 17013-1588
Carlisle is just west of Harrisburg PA. convenient to the PA turnpike and
I-81.
The track itself is located on the north side of the property, and can be seen from the PA turnpike. It’s an out-and-back asphalt course with a grass infield. There are some on and off camber turns that make this course more interesting than a normal parking lot autocross setup. It is a second gear course, but you should find it quite challenging. There will be a lot of spectators which adds to the excitement. Both the track and paddock are fenced in. Once signed in you will be issued a wristband which will give you unlimited access to the paddock.
We will publish the autocross/drift schedules as soon as they get finalized. We will be alternating sessions between autocross and drifting. The drifting will be featured by the Carlisle Performance and style show so expect plenty of spectators.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask here. We hope you will join us at the Carlisle Performance and Style show for some extra special fun with your car.

I have couple of pics of the track taken from the ridge that overlooks it but without any of the cone turns. I'll post them those shortly but they really don't do the course justice. There are a lotta action shots floating around NICO perhaps some can posted here
Skydragoness recently described it as pixelated interlocking rectangles (I'm paraphrasing). It's an out and back course where the outbound part is on a slightly lower level than the return part, providing some interesting camber changes. Torry and I spent a lot of time laying out a cone course to make it more devilish. We'll be at it again this year.
For autocrossing, last year we were doing 2 lap runs clockwise, which took most drivers about a minute or so to complete. Since we run the event ourselves, we can always make changes if everyone wants.
Drifting will be freestyle unless you want to have some plastic barrels or cones set up for you. There will be no official judging for drifting.

Wow, we're about the same distance. For me it's 2 hrs, 25 minutes. Total Est. Distance: 141.23 miles.
You're free to come and go as you please. The Carlisle Performance and Style Show has a LOT of great stuff going on throughout the 3 days, in addition to NICOfest. The drifting is going to be featured by Carlisle, so there will not likely be much else going on there during the drifting. They will provide me those "show"times, and I'll post them up with the rest of their features/activity schedules as soon as they become available.

Um it's not really much of a track, more like an asphalt sidewalk around a football field.

. Well, it's definately not Daytona, but the surface is relatively smooth for asphalt. It is a bit narrow in spots but the turns are going to be pretty tight and plentiful. If you push it hard and often during autocross, expect to use a couple 32nds
I didn't find the track to be a "tire killer" and I tested it several laps before every autocross session last year.
There is debris that collects in the grass infield and off line. And that debris can get sprinkled on the course by those that go off track. It's mostly dirt, asphalt pebbles, and bits of rubber. We remove what we see between sessions, and our volunteer corner workers remove what they see during sessions. We plan to be more assertive with the brooms this year than we were last year.

With just a learner's permit, I'm afraid we can't permit you drive on the track. However, if you wanted to go out as a passenger with your dad driving, and you both have helmets, that's something we can discuss.

This next shot looks toward the start/finish area and the paddock is beyond. There is a slight downward incline at the end of the back straight, making the hard right turn into the second lap downhill and off-camber.
. The blue barrels lined up in the background are located in the paddock

It's a good piece of pavement if you autocross it but unless you have a purpose built drift car (ie the drift truck we had there last year) it's definately not a drift friendly track. I never got out of 2nd gear which led to plenty of over revs. Not to be a party pooper but to play Devil's Advocate I can honestly say from experience that while the surface may be tire friendly the track itself is definately hard on a car's drivetrain. I'll be there an may take a lap or two for the the autocross but I'll pass on the drift portion.
As far as drift friendly tracks go VIR is a better track to drift since it's wider and longer and you don't punish your clutch by staying in 2nd gear the whole time. Then again my car isn't exactly track ready so don't take my word for it.

Chaotic Warlord: You are correct that it's probably a better course for autocross than drift. There are a couple narrow stretches on left side (closest to PA turnpike) but I think you'll agree there was still plenty of space to drift. And when you take into account the cost to drift at Carlisle (free), it's a great deal.

Bubba you're correct but I just want to insure that attendees don't go into the the drift portion blind and stupid like I did last year and need to be towed home with a blown engine. I was fortunate to live within the 100 mile distance that my AAA coverage gave me. Like I said in my previous post I don't want to be a party pooper just looking out for fellow members and their beloved rides.

That's excellent advice. For anyone that participates in an event like this, or any other "track" day for that matter, if you're not trailering your car to/from the event, you should keep in mind how hard you want to
push your car throughout the event. The goal is to have fun with your car and still be able to drive it home.

There's just enough room on the track for one car and coming out of the bottom corners thats sometimes pushing it.
Bubba looking forward to watching you guys drift the golf cart again this year. Do you know if Deiselman will be there again this year cause his truck is badass?

Red Dots - Is that about the size of a narrow one lane road?
Blue Dots - Is this say , a turn around area?
Yellow Dots - Entrance?

Am i corrected in thinking that the entire course looks like this by connecting these 2 pics?

Last year, it was one driver on track at a time for the most part. But you can pretty much do anything you want during your runs and make each run as long as you'd like. There are no time limits.
There won't be any official drift qualifying or scoring. It's more of an exhibition and having fun. The drifting is also going to be prominently featured by Carlisle, including a special guest drifter, so expect plenty of spectators.

The track is little longer than the two pictures. I didn't measure how long it is, Guessing a tad under 1/4 mile each way. To complete one lap with the cones is little over 30 seconds. We were doing two lap autocross runs. Last year there were maybe 15 turns per lap, 30 per run. That's a lot of turns.
Red dot area is a little wider than it looks, you can fit two cars beside each other.
Blue dots: for autocross we run cones throughout that area, which is off camber. We take full advantage of that extra asphalt.
yellow dots is actually a small access road/emergency exit. there's a gate farther up road. It's also a little run off area if you go too hot into that big sweeping turn.

Yup, NICO members register for free...just by replying. The track schedule has not been finalized, but drifting and autoX will not interfere because they are done on the same track. There is not room to do both at the same time, so don't worry about missing out on one because you're busy doing the other.

Carlisle Events will be supplying me the "Drift" schedule, in a few weeks which I'll post here upon receipt. The drifting is going to be a featured event, (including a guest drifter), And when we're not drifting, the track will be set up for autocross. Last year, except for a break for lunch, I believe we had enough volunteers to keep the track operating pretty much continuously throughout both days.

There really isn't a parking lot, it's also not advisable to do anything stupid like that as Carlisle PD REALLLLLYYY hates this event due to the amount of "street racers" and wannabees that show up. Be smart, be safe and don't act like a jackass and you'll get through the weekend without any tickets.

That's okay. To tie that in, Last year, the quickest autocross time was posted by someone driving a 240sx. The driver of the RX-7 got it close. I suspect there will be more drivers this year with a bigger variety of cars, including some American V8 power, which should make it really fun to watch.

| any one got any ideahs were i could get a helment cheaper |
We're accepting motorcycle helmets (M95 rating or better) in addition to auto race helmets (SA95 or better). So I'm sure most motorcycle dealers or speed shops can direct you if they don't sell helmets themselves.
There are many that buy their helmets used which could save you a lot.
I personally don't recommend used, but they are acceptable as long they have no cracks and meet/exceed the minimum ratings.
If you buy used, please be extra careful that the M/SA rating sticker is in there. I've been asked if the SA or M rating sticker is removed can the helmet still be used. The answer is no.
I would avoid department stores like Wal-mart as they tend to only sell "DOT" or "SAE" rated helmets. DOT or SAE ratings are not acceptable for this event.
The helmets can be full face or open face. All we're looking for is that SNELL (M or SA) rating , and no cracks in the helmet itself.
One thing to keep in mind is that helmet ratings expire. After a certain point, usually about 10 years after the rating, there wil be fewer and fewer track events where you will ber allowed to use them. This will probably be the last year for SA95/M95 anywhere, which should be very cheap to buy if you can find one. If you plan to do track events regularly, I would recommend getting a newer SA2005/M2005 rating.
Hope that helps.

I was looking around at a local Wal-Mart and they have Bell motorcycle helmets that are M2005 (according to their site) for about $80. |
Not saying you were seeing stuff, but you had to have been seeing stuff. Bell helmets typically are $300+.
I checked on Walmart's website, and the closest thing I could find is a Bell open-face motorcycle helmet that is NOT Snell approved, it only has a DOT rating.
Do you think you could check the model out and post up so we can verify that it is in fact Snell rated? I just find it hard to believe.
If you guys are looking for a good price on helmets that I know are Snell rated, you should check out GForce helmets. They are usually fairly cheap.
Also, for those of you who may be curious why SA helmets are more expensive than M rated helmets, here's a little info:
SA and M rated helmets are both Snell ratings. These are the highest standards that helmets have. Snell actually tests them for structural integrity and such. Any event involving a sanctioning body that has to do with cars or motorcycles typically requires a Snell rating. DOT rating means it is legal for street use--Basically it covers your noggin.
The difference between SA and M helmets are that SA helmets are fire retardant. They are typically required by Automotive racing sanctions, where as M rated helmets are usually all that is required for motorcycles (on a motorcycle, you aren't potentially trapped inside a burning vehicle). The year after the rating is the year that the rating was introduced. Snell ratings are good for 10 years. However, for this event, we are going to allow M/SA 95 helmets anyway.
Bottom line is, if you only do one or 2 events a year, you'll probably only want to spend money on an M rated helmet. However, if you are going to get serious, do some track events, etc, you want an SA rated helmet. If you can afford it, you should really have one anyway for automotive applications. And I recommend getting a 2005 helmet no matter what. A 95 helmet is technically already expired, and a 2000 helmet is only good for 2 more years. It's worth the extra money to get one that you won't have to replace in 2 years.

Hey me too. mine was a 88 GXL, then i did a Turbo Jspec swap and threw some 17" 350Z wheels on it, i just hope if i wreck drifting at carlisle its a good one because then your just a hero (not to mention the 240 guys can laugh at the rotory guy who tasted the wall.)

I thought I did, but it's not approved. I don't think I should try running my car until I get better tires and get my suspension straightened out.
But, finances are kind tight right now because I'm going to be paying $195/week for daycare starting the week of the show.

So according to the official Carlisle site they state that Jason Ellis will be drifting... not to be stupid or lazy (I could probably look it up) but who the Eff is Jason Ellis? |
Jason Ellis is an Australian professional skateboarder, tv commentator for the X-Games, lead vocal for a rock band (Taint Stick), martial arts expert, and hosts a Sirius radio show. And he does drifting.

Unfortunately there will not be any official helmet rentals at this event. There might be a few folks willing to loan theirs, but I would suggest not banking on that. If you know of any friends with motorcycles, perhaps you might be able to borrow theirs. Just be sure to check that the helmet rating sticker inside of whatever helmet you bring meets or exceeds the required rating (SA95 or M95). If there is no snell rating sticker, the helmet can't get used.

| Attention all autocrossers and drifters!! NICO wants you and your car for some fun. NICO has once again obtained private use of the Carlisle Fairgrounds race track for some free autocross/drift fun during NICOfest II the Carlisle Performance and Style show on May 10-11 (Sat/Sun). SIGNING UP If you are already a member of NICO, it’s very easy. Please take a few moments to register with NICO at the following link. http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerouser?cmd=register NICOclub is completely free. There are no obligations, no fees, no hidden charges, no junk mail. You do not need to own a Nissan or Infiniti to participate in this event. http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread/310483 Then just make a post on this thread (using the reply or quote buttons) advising us that you’d like to participate. And that’s it! You’re signed up. The Carlisle main gates will open at 0800 both days. the official address is as follows:. Carlisle Fairgrounds Carlisle is just west of Harrisburg PA. convenient to the PA turnpike and The track itself is located on the north side of the property, and can be seen from the PA turnpike. |

| Could i use a motorcycle helmet that says DOT & SNELL approved? The people at the Cycle shop said i could but i dunno.... |
The answer is maybe. The words “DOT & SNELL approved” by themselves are not enough to pass tech. The helmet must have an actual Snell RATING sticker attached to it. DOT or SAE approvals are not applicable. It's gotta have a specific Snell rating no older than M95.
That cycle shop should be able to tell you over the phone what rating the helmet has. The Snell rating sticker is normally colored and glued to the inside the helmet. If the Snell rating is M95 or newer, you're good to go.
But if the sticker is older than M95 or if there is no sticker at all, then it can't be used for this event.
I hope that helps.

If you're planning to drift, I don't see Friday track time as a problem since there are not many non-driving volunteers required to operate it.
Friday autocrossing, however, will be dependant on the number of non-driving volunteers we get.

Yes, those blue barrels will be available if you want some stategically placed. I drove by the fairgrounds yesterday (while on the PA Turnpike) and saw about a dozen of them already on the course.

I'm sure the Carlisle website (Carlisleevents.com) will have something about season tickets and whether it's worthwhile to go that route rather than individual events or days. As far as hookups or caravans, I think the roll call thread or hotel threads might help you get hooked up. I'm sure there will folks willing to share rooms.

| Hi - sorry if this has been addressed before (its a long thread): It looks like Friday afternoon is the only time I'll be able to get to the event. I'd like to do a little AutoX and am certainly willing to man the track. Will that be ok? How late do you think you'll be there? (I believe the event doors are open until 7PM). Thanks, |
That's fine. It is a long thread. we were not officially planning to autocross on Friday, just drifting. BUT, if we get enough non-driving volunteers, then we’ll probably open the course for some autocross in between the 3 featured drift sessions.
We’ll be laying out/testing/marking the autocross course Friday morning, so we’ll be ready to rock if we do get enough folks to do it.
As far as how late we’re going to operate the track on Friday. I’m guessing we’ll shut it down after the 6pm drift session. But we’ll see how the staff feels.
Saturday/Sunday will be alternating between autocross and drift throughout the day. If you check out the volunteer thread it’ll lay out by hour what should be running. Sunday afternoon, after the 1pm drift session, will be mostly autocross.
Carlisle will be featuring drifting (including guest drifter Jason Ellis) at the following times.
3 times on Friday (noon, 2:30pm , and 6pm).
4 times Saturday (9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm)
3 times Sunday (930am, 11am, 1pm)

I don't know about E-town, but the "age thing" is a legal issue. It's not going to change. I'm sorry.

White/gray two tone with a red front left quarter panel. Fugly. But it still kept up with the 3.5 Altima on acceleration somehow.

It was pretty cool.Lot's of cool stuff to see, great to see some of the NICO bigwigs in person (Abby's kinda cute in person :p) and I got to drive a KA-T, and now my 240 feels like it is run by dual hamsters. And now I'm sunburned and tired and can't see out of my contacts anymore. Awesome two days, definitely looking forward to doing this again ![]() |
Thank you!!
It was so much fun this yearrrr! And so awesome seeing everyone again. I'm just looking forward to hearing what the rental company had to say about that poor corvette we thrashed on lol
