I started in Z31s. I actually was wanting to get the S30 I have now before the sister of the woman I bought the S30 from told me she had decided to sell her Z31. The S30 was just too much of a project for me to fit into even my loose definition of "daily driver", and I already had one project car.
I don't find the S30 statistic too surprising though. This is the Classic Z section after all... but you also have to think about prices. A lot of people got into Zs before even the S130s existed. Not that long ago the Z32 was the last generation of Z they had made, and the Z31 sat kind of in the financial situation I'm seeing Z32s dipping into right now. The cheap, 20 year old cars were the S30s, so it would seem logical that they would have been relatively cheap and easy to get. The next generation of Z owners (me, perhaps) will get the Z31 as the cheaper "entry" Z car. And before too long, the Z31 will be a classic and the Z32 will be seen as the odd man out being neither new nor classic./random rant
