rb20det vs l28et

ok so i wanna swap my original l24 with either rb20 or l28if u could give cost ranges and other useful info would be appreciated i am completely new to this and im doing researchif you could help much thanks

well, for the L28ET swap, you can locate a wrecked donor for around $500 take everythign you need and sell of enough parts to py for the parts car, at least this is how I've done ti 3 times, the engine bolts directly in place and even bolts to your transmission, however if you luck out and find a 5 speeed sturbo parts car then even better

the RB20 has less displacement so you's have to work harder to make the same power (yes the RB is mroe efficient but more displacement = mroe power) you then need to by the motor and trans moutn kit form mckiney or fab your own, and have a custome driveshaft made

i agree. you could do ALOT with a l28et and for an extremely reasonable price! IMO its one of the easier/cheaper turbo motors to build.

L28ET is the way to go, it's the way I'm gonna go. I have a L28ET and 5spd lined up. Just have to start collecting parts. The the motor stock I think you can get a decent amount out of it. Theres videos of guys on youtube running just upgraded turbos and upgraded fuel systems 300hp +....so it all depends on how much money you're willing to spend.

stick turbo injectors and management max out around 230 whp, HG and headbolts max otu around 30 whp, and the stock internals max otu around 400 whp, the block, crank and rods are good to north of 600 whp

I've sat in one with an RB, same with the L28. I prefer the L28 more.

My boyfriend wants to swap it out for an RB, but thats not happening while I'm around

no, actually it's easier to get more power form the L28ET, it has mor edisplacement and a larger turbo, the RB20ET turbo will max out around 200-250 whp max, the turbo ont he L28ET si good to north of 300 whp

as far as the L28ET goes, the bottom end is pretty rock solid, and to be honest you'll start burning through transmission's LONG before you have to put substantial money in the motor. IIRC, if you start to kick more than about 350WHP to the rollers (super easy with that motor), you'll even start to eat the T-5's that came in the 280ZXT.

As someone who owns a Z31 and Z32 turbo you should know the electronics in those cars are vastly superior to the factory 280ZX AFM system. I'm surprised you haven't put a Z31 ECU in your 240Z actually.

effective my 240Z and my Z31 both run megasquirt, which is far superior to the z31 electronic's

I have no experience with JWT, but I will have to say there are many, many Z owners running megasquirt and it's VERY tunable. In my experience with it, I'm quite a fan, and can easily be changed on the fly. The JWT may be a little easier to get running since it's a re-prommed factory ECU but the MS has much more tunability.

I don't think thats a fair comparison, megasquirt is fuly programable, JWT are jus tuned chips taht are stil quite conservetive as they are talyored to work safely for the masses, nistune of similar woudl be a mroe accureate comparison, it really just depends on what you are more comfortable tuning with

M30 ecu is sequential and it runs fine on my L28et with the 259cc turbo injectors with zero tuning.....just dropping resistors.

Then you have to find one though it is possible the single cam maxima and pathfinder ecus made after 1990 might be sequential as well....haven't looked into it.

I really think the later VG30 OBDII ecus will end up being the way to go once someone spends some time finding out which addresses contain the values you want to tweek on the .bin file.

Then you can just load it through the obdII port with a multitude of programmers from the vetronix master tech, to the blue streak iFlash unit, to the Global Programmer.....etc.....the list goes on.

Of course.....you will need to add a sensor that "listens" to the ring gear in order to not have a check engine light or if you want full self diagnostic capabilities.
