Of course the 1JZ is the better engine when compared to an RB25. The RB puts out 250 in the early models and about 270 in the later ones.

The 1J, in either twin turbo or single turbo (V V T i) were both 280.

What about an RB26? Easier swap to do, plus you don't have to reroute the exhaust.

1J exhaust on the drivers side. RB's run on the passenger side.

If you are staying under 500 hp I recommend the rb25, the rb26 is much more expensive to achieve less power. And for drifting, you don't need to make more than 500 hp.

It be cheaper for you to up your fuel system, get a bigger turbo and tune your ecu out. Then you can worry about more important things like your suspension, tires...your driving technique.

Now. Let's say... got a rb25, got new forged pistons, up'ed your fuel system, big turbo, and a way to tune it. It will come out much cheaper than a 1jz or rb26 swap, and you would already be ahead with more power.

RB25 has very good power potential. Plus you should look into getting a taller final drive.

I don't know why I didn't say this earlier, but if you have an RB20DET, you can drift just fine with that engine. It's good for quite a bit of power as it is, so you can slide just fine with it.

It would be more cost effective to just build what you have than trying to source another enigne/trans/ECU and what-not.

The RB20 is a good engine. Had one in my Laurel and had plenty of power to slide it if I so desired. Actually, the guy that bought it off of me took it to a drift even the weekend he bought it and did just fine.

I was running about 240ps to the wheels with turbo back exhaust, M's pod filter and .85kg of boost.

I agree. Actually. I seen one go to 400 hp built up.

Maybe on stock internals. You could build a pretty mean RB20 with some good bottom end parts, head work, bigger turbo and fuel system, and probably still not spend as much to get there as you would with an RB26 or a 1JZ.

The 26 can make stupid power, as does the 1J, quite easily, but it costs more money as the parts for the RB are more expensive. Plus scoring the engine itself is going to be costly.

Figure on stock RB20 bottom end, with upgraded fuel system, larger turbo, FMIC, full turbo back exhaust and decent computer tune, you could get close to 400.

Now, toss in some forged pistons with a slightly higher comp ratio (not to much higher), a head that has been machined properly, cams with gears to adjust timing...you're gonna be sitting nicely around the 500 mark. And 500 is a lot of ponies.

But, as I have said before, if you're drifting, you really don't need all that much power.

Hell, most AE86's barely break the 200hp mark and look at how well they do in pro circuits.

^ I agree. (That's coming from a man who lives in Japan, and sees the Japanese tuning potential on these cars)

400 - 500 is very good power especially for drifting. Like I have said, 500 is more than enough for drifting.
