I am currently starting my SR build. Its a Red Top in an S13 Hatch. I will also start a rebuild thread asap..

First Question.I have had 2 SR blocks now, that when i started disassembly, the ARP head studs had pulled the threads out of one or two cylinders in the block. I know that it is two disimilar metals and this is fairly common on many engines. Is there anyway of preventing this from happening? I know some people suggest a heliocoil. I personally know people that have heliocoiled rocker arms and it lasts forever. Im not sure i feel comfortable with the idea, especially since i plan to run a good amount of boost.

second questionThe block i just purchased didnt come with the main caps, i know that there machined surface, but i plan to do this build correctly. Balance the crank and align hone the mains. I have other main caps that are good but i wasnt sure if this was ok.. Is this block basically junk to me, or is it fine.

Last questionI currently have my oem lifters soaking in oil. Roughly 3 out of the 8 are fairly easy to compress. The other 5 are extremely hard to compress if any at all. i know these are hydraulic lifters but are they supposed to be tight are easy??

Any input is greatly appreciated.. Thank you

Heli coil are stronger than regular threads . Especially when you put the heli coil in aluminum . And heres somee good info on heli coils and other thread inseerts http://www.thumpertalk.com/for....html.

i just helicoiled my oil feed line in the block recently and it was my first time ever doing it and it went smoothly threads look brand new so shouldn't really be a problem for a head stud either.

as for the lifters i'm not sure when i first had my engine apart i remember some of them being solid and some of them i could compress. I just put them in and didnt have a problem

You will be fine doing the helicoil if you are using arp studs because when you torque everything down the studs are already in the block and tightened down w/ an Allen, therefore when the nut is Torqued the stress is mainly on the top threads. If you read up on helicoils it says some uses including heads...had to do the same thing on my prelude even though arp's are pointless on a Honda...gonna blow with or without

Liifters need to be bled so they cannot be compressed

going with a b13 sentra se-r lifter isn't a bad idea for a rebuild. more robust than OE rwd sr.

i had to helicoil my oil feed to the turbo on my block and i asked my shop foreman at work and he said a heli coil is way stronger then the factory threads and that most guys with v8 and high hp drag cars will heli coil every thread on the motor to have a stronger thread

i went with the heliocoil guys. my machine shop told me its actually stronger than the oem threads because theres more surface area for the studs to grab a hold of. im trustin it so well wait and see..

u can use the block with the set of main caps you already have, u just have to have the shop align hone the mains to the block that way everything will match up correctly. how else would the old skool muscle car guys buy just a bare block and either buy new main caps or use some old ones off of another block? align honing is safe and you won't have any troubles with ur caps not being from the same block as long as you have them align honed before you try using them
