i have been doing alot of research lately on body work for my coupe. i want to do every thing from start to finish. i have the car sanded and filled in some spots. and now she is ready to paint. i have been looking to getting the factory champagne pearl that the coupe has but it's to much of a problem ot get plus it is expesive!!!(i am on a budget). so a friend of mine told me about duplicolors paint shop line of paints that you can get at almost any autostore, and its about $20 a quart.i didn't beleve him at first but later that night we went to a local meet and there was a fd rx7 that was painted duplicolor's paint shop silver.it looked very good!!! i started to ask the guy about who painted the car and he said that he painted the car in a weekend in his garage!!!!!!!the fd looked as if it had a pro grade paint job!!!!!!after seeing that car i was hooked on that paint.

so i did more research (as i always do!!) and i came across a guy on zilvia that painted his s13 coupe the silver from duplicolor and it looks very good.i know people are thinking right ' what happens when he paints the car silver on the out side and door jams but what happens when he pulls up the carpet and he sees that gold" what i am going to do is strip the interior bare and paint it gloss black from a can. easy solution!!!! i am going to paint my do do brown carpet and interior(does anyone know a good plastic paint for my dash and trim peices?) so what do you guys think?

the guy from zilvias s13 coupe:(before)

finised project:

Did he apply any clear to it? It has almost no shine/reflection at all from what I can see unless that's the look he's going for. Still looks 10x better than the tri-tone though.

Idk, imo gloss paint jobs should be done by the pros in actual booths. Flat/satin jobs are alot more forgiving and can look great even when it's a DIY. A good example of that is sil8drftr's car ^.

I actually think white with the "doo doo" brown interior looks good. I almost got my hands on a white LE hatch with brown leather. Got sold the day before I called the guy though, still hate myself for procrastinating on that one.

What a lot of people don't seem to grasp about the Duplicolor paint is that it is lacquer. That's why it comes in a limited number of colors. On the good side, you can just rough it up a little and apply a few more coats at any time. Hence cars from the 50's being restored today having like a quarter inch of paint on them.I've said it before, if you have the ability to do a proper multi stage process, do that, but if it's this or rattle can. This is obviously better.

Its not the 'type' of paint that makes a cars paint job look good.

Its the PAINTER who needs to lay on the paint properly to make it look good.

There is a reason there are professional painters, and why any average Joe can't spray his car perfect.

If you have never painted before, plan on orange peel and spots missed or such with the clear coat. Applying clear coat is really an art.

Keep in mind that one gallon of this stuff is not equal to a gallon of paint purchased at a paint store.Reason being?Duplicolor's paint is already pre-mixed. So you get what you get, you don't get to multiply it by the thinner/hardener or such.

The coupe looks good, but i've read online in places that duplicolor looks great at first but within a years time starts to fade. Im not sure if this is true but I would do more research on in dupicolor's paintshop. Oh yeah did the guy spray any clearcoat over his coupe's paintjob? Doesnt really look glossy.

Its a decent cheap paint but like anything you get what you pay for. Acrylic lacquers don't hold up well over time, might not be a big deal if you garage keep your car though. I say save up a little bit more you guys spend thousands on engines and mods then $20 on paint? You can get decent single stage urethane for probably $200/gallon

IMO, if ur going to go through to trouble in doing prep work, all the masking, and and even spray using a real air compressor gun, you might as well shell out a few hundred on getting real paint. i did mine with a few buddies and the paint costed just a little more than 300.

Agreed, however this is single stage paint. I rattled my hatch with Duplicolor universial truck black, and if you use glaze to fill anything in, lacquer based paint makes it soft again. However, with work you can make it just as glossy as any other paint, just plan on copious amounts of wet sanding and buffing.

i say dont use. i used this paint on my front bumper and didnt like the way it turned out so i swithced to NASON. with paint and reducers i had 4 gallons and a quart. primer, base, and clear all for just 450. your looking to spend 300, is 150 that much more to have quality paint? plus you dont need as much paint as i bought. i just had a few mishaps and had to buy 2 more quarts of base coat. also i painted door jams and everything. not sure what your doing though. please dont use it. its obvious that a paint where hardners and activators are used is going to hold up better than something that can just sit in the can and not dry.

EDIT: actually it was 5 gallons. forgot the base coat reducer
