Decided to start a new post so that it does not get lost. Sound quality is so so due to the fact I used a cell phone. Sound is noticeable at the beginning and towards the end. Turn up the volume. Sounds like wind noise, but trust me its a distinct rattle

I had to fix the link so it would work...

OMG! Thanks Paul for posting that clip! You did a great job capturing it.

Hopefully this will help others diagnose it.

Thanks, so you also heard the noise on the clip. Reason I am asking is since the clips sound quality is so so, some may not hear it. You have the FWD version, so you dont have the noise and would not know what to listen for. If you can hear it everybody else should be able to pick it up.I am so frustrated with this. All I get from Nissan Canada: we are working on it. From no rattle when we got the car to this!!!

My FWD does make a short tick/rattle noise (about 0.5 sec) when decelerating but it's nowhere near that bad. Actually, you have drive around with the windows rolled down, radio off, and at a slow speed and then you can barely ear it. It's never gotten worse, nor do I find it annoying.

Yours on the other hand sounds like your muffler fell off and is dragging in the pavement!

Thanks, Paul for posting that. That's exactly what we have on our Rogue. We're contemplating maybe trying to make another sound clip/video so people can see the speeds in which it happens or something. But basically, drive no faster than 35 mph (although you can hear it at this speed too) in a quiet area, lift your foot off the pedal and you can duplicate it if you have it. If not... consider yourself lucky! And if you haven't experienced it with more than 2,000 miles on the car, chances are you won't. It starts before that... usually between 750 - 1,700 miles on the odometer. But our car didn't make the noise either when we first bought it. If we heard it on the lot, we would've said, no way am I buying a new car making that much noise.

We may still try to get another sound clip. We just don't know at the moment. Yours is a good one, Paul.

By the way, our Rogue now has about 7,200 miles on it... and looking to add at least another 600 miles this weekend with a weekend trip. Hopefully, it'll make it. We don't trust it to go on trips more than 300 miles away from home.

Yep I have lost confidence in this car. I am sure the transmission will be fine, but who knows. I am almost hoping that the check engine light goes on or the car just will not shift. At least Nissan will have to do something than!!

Yep my service manager is aware of it. Nissan Canada is working on it!!Decided to phone my dealer again. They have had at least 6/7 Rogue's with the same issue. Nissan Canada is not authorizing any transmission replacements until they figure out what the problem is.Cant even sell the car because of this!!!!

No, in fact I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary(yet) Fuel consumption is the same, the only thing that has changed is the rattle. Checked my transmission fluid, seems fine( although I broke the stupid tap that locks the dipstick My service manager assures me this is not an isolated issue and Nissan Canada will not sweep this under the carpet!!!Paul

I did actually, more so the high RPM's. When going down a small grade the engine rpm's would race ad in no way reflect the speed I was traveling

That was the engine automaticalyl gearing down to assist you in slowing the car down.

I have had this happen many times, even in Illinois, where Hills are a rare thing.

I get it mostly going onto off-ramps from highways/freeways.

That .5% grade must be a killer

Call me crazy, but I don't really hear anything unusual on the sound clip.

You have to put the volume to the max, you will hear like cats fighting under the hood, or more seriously, like Philip said, like a muffler dragging on the pavement.

It is hard to know for sure how loud it is but for sure, it is not normal. Cannot understand how a honest mechanic could find that normal.

There is something wrong in your car and Nissan should fix it (at least acknowledge the problem, fix it may not be that simple).

Edit: You can hear it from 18s to 15s upon acceleration and from 8s to 2s on deceleration. After listening it again and compared to the engine noise while cruising, I will say it is quite loud, noticeable, same level as the engine at about 1500rpm (engine sound replaced by rattling noise on deceleration).

I start to understand why some are so furious when being told "don't hear it" or "sounds normal". Are you deaf, Nissan mechanics??

Thank you for posting the sound clip.My AWD SL with 2700 miles does not have that sound. But clearly it is possible that my car may devlop it in the future asit seems not to be an isolated issue. I can only hope that Nissanwill figure out a solution, or do a recall if needed, as soon as possible.

Ken,

As far as we know, if you haven't experienced it by now, the chances of you experiencing it in the future might not happen. I don't know this for a fact, but most of us with this issue developed it before hittine the 2000 mile mark. So hopefully that's a good thing you haven't experienced it.

That TSB just describes how to properly initialize the tranmission after it is replaced. I applies to any current Nissan with an automatic OR CVT transmission, not just the Rogue.

Wierd, I do get a get a light rattle that eerily sounds like that but it only lasts for a second or two. I can only hear it from inside the vehicle and I have to have the windows rolled up, fan off, and radio off. Even then it's not very loud and difficult to hear. I have 17,000km or about 10,000 mi already.

Just saw this post.

That sound is definitely NOT normal. I have an SL AWD w/5100 miles, and some of those miles were off-road. No noises at all...I guess I'm lucky? Most of the miles were highway, very little city.

Those of you with this noise - are you doing mostly city or highway miles?

We live 10 miles from town, most of our mileage was freeway or 2 lane highway 40 mph+

We hear it in city driving

I only hear it when I go slow in parking lots or even slowing down in general. I did drive out to my dealer earlier this week, to ensure that what I am hearing is in fact the "rattle" that Nissan Canada is "working" on.The service manager stated it was and not to worry!!.Paul

Paul! That is freakin scary! I'm a long time gear-head (paid my way thru college drag racing) and have wrenched on all kinds of cars. I can't imagine for even a second that sound would be dubbed "normal" by anyone. I have an '09 S AWD and just turned 4300 miles. I have NO sound coming from anywhere in or under the car that's remotely close to what you have. I had to keep an open mind in the early days of ownership because the CVT operates so differently from a typical automatic trans - it sort of reminded me of an old powerglide. But after a couple weeks, the sounds became normal - even the knock(s) as the ABS and such are going through system check. That said, if the sound you posted was coming from my car and the dealer/Nissan were uncooperative, I'd be following the terms outlined in the lemon law. That particular bit of legislation doesn't really make dealers/mfg's sweat too much - it's just part of doing big volume business. Recalls - now those are a different story. I really hope this turns out okay for you. I also hope my CVT doesn't develop a similar "normal" sound some miles down the road. Best, Mike

You may be getting an occasional spark knock, which is normal, especially for Nissan's that run lean.

I get spark knock here and there when driving, especially on hot days.

That noise can often confuse some, early on I got worried about that sound being the CVT but I was told it was spark knock and its a very normal occurence on Nissan's because they run lean.

Does anyone have a sound/video clip of this? I cannot get this one of the first post to work. It just takes me to a photobucket. I think my Rogue rattles at the initial acceleration but I don't know what I am listening for? Thanks for any help!

its probably a heat-shield on your exhaust. common on every car

Is this something that I can fix/tighten? How would I know if it were a CVT issue? I do not feel like it shifts weird or anything but I am not a mechanic.
