‘95-’97 Quest 110 Amp Alternator Install in S13By “NateDogg”

Parts:‘95-’97 Quest Alternator31.5” replacement belt (stock is 30.5”)Minimum 4.5” Angle Grinder with flap disk and cut-off disk5/16”x2” bolt, nut and washer (adjustment locking fasteners)Wire cutters (cut positive lead ring to fit new stud)

Steps:

1) Remove battery cables, intake, shrouding etc. that may impede removal/installation of new alternator. I have ST swaybar that required loosening to fit bigger Quest alternator.

2) Remove slotted adjustment bracket from front cover and grind the bracket slot as shown to allow 1/2” gap. Stock alternator C-C is 6.5”. Quest Alt is 6.25” so a quarter inch is needed to be ground off the bottom of the “slot”. Also grind the lip to allow the bolt adapter to sit squarely.

3) Grind alternator housing to allow clearance of vacuum lines under throttle body. Obviously I went overboard. Remove as much as possible without affecting the bolt that holds the alternator together.

4) Use cut-off wheel to cut the 1” knob off the adjustment bolt bracket on the alternator. Just cut it off flush as shown with 5/16” bolt through it in previous pic.

5) Remove alternator bracket to block and grind to allow the alternator to pivot fully without interference. This is the key to having maximum adjustment. I had to take off about a half inch of material on the bracket.

6) Cut stock positive lead ring terminal and open up the ring to fit over larger 8mm Quest stud.

7) Install with new 31.5” belt. Tighten adjustment bolt with 1/2” socket and open end wrench.

8) Enjoy your new alternator!

I did this upgrade and with my Altima F-Fans, Stereo system, and all the other electronics, I run up to 17psi on pump gas with .035 gap / .025 gap @ 32psi with out any ignition break up at all. I now don't have to change spark plugs every 4K miles anymore. This is one of the best upgrades for a SE KA-T could have with lots of amperage draw. I no longer need to upgrade my stock ignition.

Thank you for sharing, Duron.

WDRacing: I have a .pdf file with arrows and such in the pics if you can host it.

I'm pretty sure the s14 se models with fog lights have the 110 amper on them so you could get a bracket from one of those and bolt it right up for the s13 maybe. they are both de blocks. not sure on belt alignment though. food for thought not tried and tested yet !!!

I did the install on both sohc & dohc w/ a lot less work required than you did:

You don't need to grind the alternator or the bracket if you find the right belt (I'm currently running the quest on my '92 240sx).

s14 se models were 90 amps.

Some alternators are different. I would recommend a test fit on the alt-block bracket before grinding. However, mine did require a fair bit of work. I didn't do it for my enjoyment..

I've only been thru 2 '97 quest alternators & both fit w/o major issue, lucky me.

Do you have a proper inverter to charge the laptop? The inverter you are using may be for 12v ports that newer cars have - the cig port on the 240 is only 5v dood.

Yep, and after doing a back to back comparison, the 110 amp blows away the 90 amp.

With the stock alternator, and all of my electronics accessories on full blast, the car will go from 14 volts to 12 volts within a minute or so and then stay there.

With the 110 amp Quest alternator, I can have all accessories on and the voltage never drops below 13.8.

Ooo 5 volt outlet.. Yea that would be a problem hah. Ill have to hardwire 12 volts to the plug.

yea this mod has been on my list for some time but i can't bring myself to take out a working alternator. when it does call quits on me, there will be nothing but a quest alternator in the car. oddly enough i get good voltage with all my electronics and system blaring. though at nite it does hover around 13 or so but i think certain songs can influence that lol. definitely a good mod for anyone that needs an alternator for sure.

Can the moderator that changed the title please fix the spelling on 'alternator'.

Thanks for making me look like an idiot.
