That's interesting, all that baffling & yet those that have eliminated it from the loop report little or no difference in sound attenuation. What is your perspective?

Any idea as to weight of the ''suitcase''?

Stainless stell never is!

Now one can see why no gain in performance from its elimination. Very well designed not to be constrictive. Sometimes bigger is indeed better.

A lot of the performance gains from removing the muffler are due to weight savings.

Really? C'mon man...

However it's probably a good thing that the name Infinity and not Nissan is displayed on that line of cars. Seems like the catalytic converter used in Nissan cars is the most favored by thieves and they actually cut them out of parked cars to sell to junk yards/scrap buyers.

Yep. The Nissan cats bring in the most money. In fact quite a lot of money for a few minutes work with a portable Sawzall. Ya'll might want to think about that when, and where ya'll park.

Also the newer Nissan cats seem to be failing faster than the pre 2000 units more demand to pass emissions.................everytime they try to save money by reformulating the amount of platnium.

A real challenge try to make them last 100k and not spend an extra $150.

Lots of demand from G35 idiots who installed test pipes gave cats away now need them when they got caught in a visual inspection.

To experience the performance gain, just remove your spare as it is much easier to replace. Maybe even rear seat is easier.

What is wrong with the concept of a stripped luxury car?

Removing the spare and all the hardware isn't the worst idea if you have towing coverage, run-flat tires, and stay around town. The spare tire basin becomes a cargo bin. If any of your travel puts you in a bad neighborhood at night or the desert at high noon, its risky.

With all the cross-country travel I did with my Qs, I carried a full size spare tire, floor jack, t-shaped tool for the lugs, water, coolant, oil, ATF, rubber bands, twist ties, basic tools, spare clamps, spare hoses, and anything else laying around the garage just in case.

Removing the suitcase muffler doesn't add noise when cruising at 60-70mph, but does effectively reduce a little weight. Plus, the sound of the VH4x at WOT through straight pipes is just delicious. I kept my suitcase in the shed in case I wanted to sell the car to a non-NICO member.

Are all the interior parts stainless as well?

I recently had a failure of my catalytic converter with the result of parts of the cat going into the muffler. The shop thought I should probably replace the muffler as well?

Well.. my question is this.. Can one do away with the G50 muffler alltogether and get an aftermarket or different brand and lighter brand than what is originally on there. And not fail Inspection when it comes to emmisions? If so, WHAT? if not .. DAM!

Noise regulations vary, but otherwise the muffler you choose will not affect tailpipe emissions. It plays no role in reducing the output anything but sound.

zerothread?id=338745 The only reason to remove the muffler is if you like the sound in the clip above. There's little to no horsepower, weight savings is minimal (maybe 30 lbs-not nothing-but still).

Its all about sound, sound sound. And the only way you can have an definitive opinion on this is if someone is suggesting removing your muffler as opposed to their own. Otherwise, to each their own.

I know this is an old thread but back when I read this a few years ago and saw the pics, it had me thinking. I never did think to ask though. I was thinking that all of the turbulence that is created in the muffler could cause some back pressure and the least amount of turbulence and turns the air has to make, the better and smoother the flow would be, which would free up some HP. Am I wrong?
