Hey all,

Ill get straight to the point, my plan is to replace my shot rb25det with a vh41. Ive searched through the forum to find all the manual conversion options that you guys are using and i wanted to know your opinions on what you think i should do.

The engine is going into my r32 drifter, like i said i had an rb25det, well i also have the rb25det 5spd trans (you know the big one) and in all honesty i would like to keep it(despite the fact i have worn the 4th gear synchro) and thats where the problems start. Im in New Zealand, along with Mettler, so its really going to hinder any real chance of getting any of the complete adapter kits you guys are running shipped down here, mainly just due to horrendous shipping charges. My only real options would be 1)to fabricate my own setup, copying the designs you guys are using 2) cut and weld the bellhousings together(which i am a little sketchy about) or 3) whats currently looking to be the best idea, sell the rb25det box and see if i can grab a r154 supra or even a v160 6spd:D and the fabricate a bellhousing with adapter like Mettlers.

What do you guys think i should do? A mate of mine is gonna spin up my flywheel for me, and i have pretty good clutch contacts cause im in the trade. my only real problem is the trans/adapter issue.

Your thought and advice is greatly appreciated.

Oh and do the later model vh41s have a different intake manifold? I had a quick look for an engine last week and the one i found doesnt have the spider manifold and the guy says its a later model one.

Cheers

Hi 32, yeah the later model VH41s have a different intake manifold (this is the engine we refer to as the USDM VH41). Avoid this engine, it does not have the main bearing beam like the other VH engines, and a number of other changes reduce the awesomeness of this version in comparison to those with the spider manifold.

With regards to the manual conversion... I'm convinced modifying the auto bellhousing & bolting up a Supra box (split case style) is the way to go. The RB25DET box is very strong, and also highly sought after... you could probably sell it for around $2.5k and get an R154 (just as strong), and pay for your manual conversion with the remaining money.

Sweet as Mettler, thanks for that. Did you use a mig or tig to weld your adapter plate to your bellhousing?

For anyone else other than people that cant get Z32/R32 trans very easily, I would disagree with mettler... but if you're paying a bunch of money for one of those trans vs hardly any money for a supra box, then I say go for it.

who knows, maybe it wouldnt be too expensive to ship my adapter once I get it done!

Wes, all the adaptor plates that are presently available suit the VH45, not the VH41.

So if you're going to have to reinvent the wheel anyway, you may as well do it in such a way that allows you to retain the factory starter as well as not have to use a flywheel spacer etc. Have you worked out yet how you're going to spigot the gearbox input shaft?

lol, no way Wes!

32: yeah m8 my conversion was a plate tig welded on to the back of the bellhousing. It may be worth investigating the creation of a VH41DE adaptor plate to suit common Nissan boxes. In fact, I may get on to this soon.

After some deliberation, i have decided to stick with the r33 trans, im going to tig the front half of the vh bellhousing to the rb bellhousing/front casing and then get it cryo treated for strength. wish me luck!

Don't bother with cryo treating it. Unless you have a 4:1 first gear and maybe 1500nm torque, then it will be fine just being welded.

Aren't the 41 and 45 bellhousings the same just backwards? If so then you could just flip the adapter and countersink the other side of it. Just a thought.

Im using an RB25DET large casing box, with a custom fabricated bell houseing. Probably running a PPG dog gearset with an ikea formula sequential shifter assembly.

Should be good for year one (800hp, mild tune)
